Deaths Registered to date in England and Wales versus the equivalent 5-year average.

Data includes Weeks 1 to 31 (up to and including the week ending 4th August 2023) and is produced by the ONS Table shows what the ONS defines as "excess deaths" i.e. almost 24,000 "excess deaths" (7% increase) registered in 2023 over and above the 5-year average.

Overwhelmingly more of these "excess deaths" are occurring at home but deaths in every setting are higher; despite the 5-year average including "the pandemic".
