One of the saddest cases I had as a obstetrician, was a baby born with ambiguous genitalia. After doing the chromosome analysis, the baby was male . Tertiary care center decided to turn the baby to a female (surgical intervention and hormone replacement) . I saw the mom over the years and said that she had gender confusion , depression and had suicidal ideation .
I recently attended a university graduation ceremony where the convocation speaker told the recent graduates that one of the best things they can do is to learn how to live in the gray and live in ambiguity. I couldn't help but shake my head during the speech.
