Definitely plausible that the Brits were involved in the planning, reconnaissance and surveillance by its Special Boat Service. The actual dunking was done via the Yanks - they have more equipment and weapons.
Since there was basically zero risk of casualty, I would want to be involved if I were the Brits. Exercises can do only so much. There is no substitute for a real op. Like there is no substitute for actual combat. Ask any experienced soldier.
