How many times do you mess with trying to blow up the world till you eventually blow up the world? These things occur to me even when they're doing well intentioned things. For example what happens if they engineer a bug that eats oil spills so effectively that the bugs start consuming oil reserves and emitting noxious caustic or acidic green house gases in to the atmosphere? Your oil spill wonder solution suddenly becomes an existential problem. A problem far worse than the spill itself. Bugs that eat oil sludge already exist which makes sense since oil has been seeping in to oceans and bogs since long before man. So say in the spirit of "doing good" they "Gain of Function" one of those bugs where it becomes OVERLY effective. Now what? Is it going to be like mRNA causing cancer then proposing mRNA to fix cancer? Are we going to create bugs to eat oil spills then create bugs to eat the oil bugs? It can get out of hand I'd thing. Point is, you mess around too much and you can REALLY screw things up even with good intentions

I'm not so sure the new existential war methodologies have such easily understood constraints. You watch a nuke, particularly a fusion bomb and the consequence is viscerally clear.

The problem IMO is are trying to think rationally and I try to think rationally myself, but the problem is I am not so sure rational thinking always applies when you are dealing with delusional cowboy madmen. It could be a mistake to ascribe rational logic to them and then assume that will construct the boundaries to what they are willing to do. I think that, for many not necessarily madmen tech geeks the impetus comes from the directions from above. I myself for example may at one point in time worked for a Raytheon or whatever because those are the kinds of places that appreciate tech geek skills. AND THEY PAY BETTER THAN DIRECTING YOUR SKILLS TO MAKING SMARTER TRAFFIC LIGHTS. However, if you don't stop to think that your talents and efforts are being harnessed to produce skin melting weapons technologies you may just take the check, do what you're told and not think too hard about the end product. You're not going to take a huge pay cut to go make better traffic lights because your "morals" won't let you make better killing machines. After all, the reason you submit to the hazing of a tech education is because it may open access to the big paychecks and the perks of being an "elite". The big house in the more exclusive hoods and perhaps even an entry level trophy spouse.
As long as money is the primary driver of people there will not be a lot of soul searching going on. Doctors for example are thought of as the biggest brain group out there but the fact that mRNA kills was not enough to stop most of them because the cost of introspection is loss of the big house the trophy spouse and the entry level elite life style. Never mind that tech geeks are never considered TRULY elite because that only comes with a certain kind of breeding and bloodline. But the elite do need brains to run the show so they can fool them by letting them think "your one of us" inner circle elites.
Bottom line is madness has a mind of its own.
