I got a message from the electric company this week reminding to keep a minimum of gallon of water on hand per person/pet for at least three days in case of outages.

that company doesn't even supply water, so that was interesting.

when filtering water, if you have access to charcoal (not the chemical laden briquettes but natural charcoal or even activated charcoal for aquarium filters) it'll help immensely in removing contaminants.

here's a very basic filter:

https://offgridworld.com/how-to-make-a-5-gallon-bucket-water-filter/

also, you left out distillation as a simple water treatment. it does remove important minerals as well as contaminants though. plus anything with an equal or lower vaporization point as water (like many petroleum products) won't be removed.

I advise solar stills if possible.

they can be fancy, like: https://www.motherearthnews.com/diy/how-to-make-a-solar-still-ze0z1209zsch/

https://www.offthegridnews.com/grid-threats/how-to-build-a-solar-powered-still-to-purify-drinking-water/

or very simple, like:

or this small scale one (you don't need the synthetic seawater part of the experiment) https://www.starhop.com/blog/2020/4/29/at-home-stem-activities-diy-solar-still

tap water sucks for chemical contaminant levels anyway, so there's no time like the present to set up a solar still. (yes, self, we'll get to that eventually)

This is excellently done and contains so much valuable information. I printed it to a pdf to print and save. I have already bought 55 gallon barrels for water and rain barrels. We are fortunate to have a home with a well, so we bought a generator that is run on both propane and gasoline. We also bought 5 gallon containers designed specifically to put in our home with water. I completely forgot about the issue with hoses in my prepping and thanks for giving us information on good ones! That will be my next purchase. I bought a Berkey over 10 years ago and thankfully haven’t had to use it yet, but do need to buy more filters! Thanks again for such a great newsletter! Just a note for those who haven’t started doing some preparation. Don’t wait and start now! It’s takes time, money and effort to get a good safety plan in place for what is coming. It can feel overwhelming, but the more I prepare the better I feel about protecting my family!
