You go in thinking QA has this vaunted purpose to "maintain high standards" but what you end up learning is that they may set something aside for a temporary QA excuse BUT THEY ALMOST NEVER discard the faulty product. They end up finding some sucker to dump it on or some alternative purpose to dump it. But they don't put it in the trash bin where you'd expect trash to go (or at least that was my experience). There were so many times I saw product get set aside in the warehouse on "QA Hold" because they were clearly defective only to find it would disappear a few months down the road. When I'd ask the warehouse guy "where did that QA Hold batch go?" the answer was almost ALWAYS "oh, we shipped it a few months ago".
