White House admits US has troops on the ground in Yemen

In a press briefing on Jan. 17, Pentagon press secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said, “I’m not aware of any US forces on the ground.” 

Troops are on the ground in Yemen, according to a report from the White House. When asked if there was a presence there, the Pentagon refused to acknowledge the reality earlier in January.  “A small number of United States military personnel are deployed to Yemen to conduct operations against al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula and ISIS,” the White House told Congress in a December 7 report.  

US warship had close call with Houthi missile in Red Sea

A cruise missile launched by the Houthis into the Red Sea on Tuesday night came within a mile of a US destroyer before it was shot down, four US officials told CNN, the closest a Houthi attack has come to a US warship.

In the past, these missiles have been intercepted by US destroyers in the area at a range of eight miles or more, the officials said. But the USS Gravely had to use its Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) for the first time since the US began intercepting the Houthi missiles late last year, which ultimately succeeded in downing the missile, officials said.

US strikes multiple drones in Yemen, American official says

The United States and Britain have launched strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen and returned the militia to a list of "terrorist groups."

The United States struck up to 10 unmanned drones in Yemen that were preparing to launch, a US official said late on Wednesday, amid escalating tensions from the war in Gaza spreading through the region. The Iran-aligned Houthis, who control the most populous parts of Yemen, have launched a wave of exploding drones and missiles at commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in recent weeks, calling it a response to Israel's military operations in Gaza and a show of solidarity to Palestinians.

Iran will not let any threat from the US go “unanswered,” the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Wednesday. The statement came after US President Joe Biden said he had drawn up a response to an attack on American troops in Jordan. Biden told reporters on Tuesday that he had decided how to respond to the drone attack, which left three US soldiers dead and dozens more injured on Sunday.

The meeting took place amid a flurry of reports on a potential deal being examined by Israel and Hamas to free the hostages.

Biden developing new Mideast doctrine bent on forming Palestinian state — NYT’s Friedman

US President Joe Biden’s administration is homing in on a new doctrine involving an unprecedented push to immediately advance the creation of a demilitarized but viable Palestinian state, The New York Times’ Thomas Friedman says.

The plan, Friedman writes, “would involve some form of US recognition of a demilitarized Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip that would come into being only once Palestinians had developed a set of defined, credible institutions and security capabilities to ensure that this state was viable and that it could never threaten Israel.”

'Prepare for the worst' recommends gov't letter due to potential crisis in the north

The advanced preparations recommended in the document include emergency lighting, a first aid kit, an emergency stock of food and water, and having a radio receiver with a battery.

A document warning of an extreme war scenario in the North and recommending preparations for several days of electricity blackout circulated among Justice Ministry employees on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the National Emergency Authority urged all government ministries to develop plans for a week-long blackout, anticipating a large-scale exercise said to occur in mid-February. Similar letters were also sent to directors of geriatric institutions.

"It’s been definitively established that the plane was shot down by an American Patriot air defense system," Putin said during a campaign event for his reelection.
