“The missile system Sarmat has a wide range of capabilities for deploying various types of combat payloads and is based on principles that assure guaranteed penetration of any anti-ballistic missile (ABM) system, both now and in the future,” General Sergey Karakaev said in an interview with Krasnaya Zvezda (Red Star), the official newspaper of the Russian military.

A senior member of the Russian diplomatic mission in the Central African Republic (CAR) has been hospitalised, Moscow’s embassy in Bangui confirmed to Russian media, after a reported parcel bomb explosion. 

The official was identified as Dmitry Sytyy, who heads the local branch of the “Russian House”, a network of cultural centers under the Foreign Ministry.

An air raid alert was announced for all parts of Ukraine on Friday morning, as media and officials reported explosions in various cities and regions, including in the capital. 

The mayor of Kiev Vitaly Klitschko reported explosions in at least three of the city's neighborhoods and has urged residents to remain in bomb shelters. Aleksey Kuleba, who heads the Kiev Region’s administration, claimed air defense systems around the capital were engaging incoming missiles.

"The US is not at war with Russia, and we do not seek conflict. Our focus is on providing Ukraine with the security assistance it needs to defend itself," Ryder told a briefing on Thursday answering the question on US reaction to Russia's comments regarding reports on possible US exports of Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine.

The government in Belgrade has officially petitioned the KFOR peacekeeping mission for the return of up to 1,000 police to its breakaway province of Kosovo, citing a provision of the UN Security Council Resolution 1244. The request comes as President Aleksandar Vucic accused the ethnic Albanian government in Pristina of “terrorizing” the remaining ethnic Serbs.

The resolution officially put an end to the NATO attack on Serbia in 1999, allowing the US-led alliance to seize Kosovo but nominally guaranteed Serbia’s sovereignty over the province. Kosovo’s provisional government then declared independence in 2008, but neither Serbia nor the UN have recognized it.

Germany on Wednesday signed a contract with the US to purchase dozens of Lockheed Martin-made F-35 fighter jets, which are capable of carrying nuclear warheads that the US keeps in Germany.

There are about 20 US B-61 nuclear gravity bombs stored in Germany under NATO’s nuclear sharing program. While Germany has no nuclear weapons of its own, it maintains a fleet of aging Tornado bombers capable of dropping them, which the F-35s will replace.

Senate passes defense bill rescinding COVID vaccine mandate

WASHINGTON (AP) — A bill to rescind the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for members of the U.S. military and provide nearly $858 billion for national defense passed the Senate on Thursday and now goes to President Joe Biden to be signed into law.

The bill provides for about $45 billion more for defense programs than Biden requested and roughly 10% more than last year’s bill as lawmakers look to account for inflation and boost the nation’s military competitiveness with China and Russia. It includes a 4.6% pay raise for servicemembers and the Defense Department's civilian workforce.

Update (0720ET): Crypto exchange Binance has seen its proof-of-reserve audits removed from auditor Mazars’ website.

“Mazars has indicated that they will temporarily pause their work with all of their crypto clients globally, which include Crypto.com, KuCoin, and Binance. Unfortunately, this means that we will not be able to work with Mazars for the moment,” a spokesperson for the firm said in an emailed statement to Bloomberg News on Friday.

“Making a statement on why an auditing company decided to quit working with crypto? Ask them lol,” the tweet reads.

The news comes shortly after Mazars confirmed on Dec. 7 that Binance possessed control over 575,742 Bitcoin of its customers, worth around $9.7 billion at the time of writing.
