Ukraine threatens to quit peace talks with Russia
The country’s president has named Kiev’s ‘red lines’
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed on Saturday what kind of events might force his country to withdraw from peace negotiations with Moscow.
During a press conference held at one of Kiev's metro stations amid the ongoing Russian offensive in Ukraine, Zelensky was asked how Kiev would respond to potential independence referendums in the territories controlled by Russian forces. The president admitted that it would force him to stop any talks with Moscow.
“If our people are destroyed in Mariupol, if a referendum, a pseudo-referendum, is announced in any new pseudo-republics of Ukraine, Ukraine will withdraw from any negotiations process,” Zelensky said.

An attack against a spacecraft could usher in the next global war, Dmitry Rogozin, the head of Russia's national space agency Roscosmos, said on Saturday.
“One must keep in mind that the destruction of a foreign spacecraft means World War III. It’s a casus belli, and there’s no doubt about that,”Rogozin said, using a Latin term for a formal legal reason to start a war.
Rogozin was commenting on Washington’s decision to stop conducting anti-satellite missile tests. Announcing the move on Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris called the destruction of satellites during such tests “reckless and irresponsible”because it leaves dangerous space debris.

Russian forces have destroyed a logistics terminal in Odessa that held a large batch of foreign weapons, Moscow said on Saturday amid its ongoing military offensive in Ukraine. However, the city’s authorities claimed that its air defense group destroyed two missiles but that another four hit a military target and residential buildings, leading to victims. It was not immediately clear if the civilian buildings were hit as a result of attempts by Ukrainian forces to strike down the missiles initially aimed at a military target.

Russia's air traffic regulator sent a warning to airlines about potential upcoming flights without using the American Global Positioning System (GPS).
Russian newspaper Izvestia reported Friday that a letter from the Federal Air Transport Agency (FATA) instructed national airlines to be aware of "GPS failures, degradations, and abnormal performance."

Italy will become the first European nation to implement a social credit system – where citizens will be rewarded for their “good behavior”.
Starting in the fall of 2022, the city of Bologna will begin a new pilot project. Citizens who display good behavior such as correctly recycling or using public transportation will be rewarded.
The Bologna municipality is deploying a “Smart Citizen Wallet” which will be the primary method for citizens to collect digital coins in exchange for behavioral changes. Based on the given scores, a person can also receive discounts for local shops.
The primary argument for this program is to “save resources” and promote climate friendly behavior.
UK's Largest Supermarket Begins Rationing Cooking Oil Amid Supply Disruption
If record-high food prices weren't enough. The Russia-Ukraine conflict has choked off the world of sunflower oil supply, forcing the largest supermarket in the UK to begin rationing.
The Guardian reports that Tesco, with more than 4,000 retail stores, placed buying limits of three cooking oil bottles per customer. It follows Waitrose and Morrisons, other supermarket chains that set limits of just two per customer.

World Bank Chief Warns Of Food Crisis Due To Russia-Ukraine Conflict
World Bank president David Malpass told the BBC at the IMF-World Bank spring meetings in Washington that record food prices could see hundreds of millions of people forced into poverty if the conflict in Ukraine does not come to an end.
“It’s a human catastrophe, meaning nutrition goes down. But then it also becomes a political challenge for governments who can’t do anything about it, they didn’t cause it and they see the prices going up,” Malpass said.
Global Rice Production Set To Plunge 10%, Threatening Half Of Humanity
Farmers in China, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Vietnam — the largest rice-producing countries could experience reduced output due to soaring fertilizer prices.
The International Rice Research Institute warns that harvests could plunge as much as 10% in the next season, equating to about 36 million tons of rice, or enough food to feed a half billion people, according to Bloomberg.
Chemical fertilizers, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, are the most applied nutrients for high-yielding rice cultivation. Farmers have been particularly vulnerable to soaring fertilizer prices as some have reduced the amount of nutrients to save costs. This threatens future harvests as production declines could stoke food inflation for a crop that feeds half of humanity.

COVID-19 vaccine makers Pfizer and Moderna both separately named new CFOs on Monday, with Pfizer hiring a CFO who is stepping down from his post as finance chief of retailer Lowe's Companies and who was formerly a CFO at CVS Health. Moderna is tapping a one-time finance chief at Cardinal Health, most recently a CFO of Dentsply Sirona, a dental supply company.
David Denton will be the new CFO of Pfizer and will take over on May 2 for Frank D'Amelio, who is retiring after a 15-year run. Moderna will replace the retiring David Meline with Jorge Gomez on May 9.
Gomez, 54, will receive an initial annual base salary of $700,000 and is eligible for an annual cash bonus with an incentive target of 90%, a one-time signing bonus of $500,000 and a new hire equity award valued at $4 million, according to an SEC filing. Gomez also will be eligible to participate in an annual equity award program with a target value between $3 and $4 million. No filing on Denton’s compensation is available yet, a Pfizer spokesperson said.

James O’Keefe and the team at Project Veritas obtained a recording of AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot explaining plainly that people with immune deficiencies should forego taking his company’s injections, directly contradicting guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO).
The WHO not only wants immunocompromised people to get the normal course of injections, but also additional shots in the form of boosters. This, Soriot said more than a year ago, is dangerous and should be avoided.
