Russia avoided civil war – Putin

The Russian president praised soldiers and security officers for their resolve during last week’s mutiny by the Wagner Group

Russian military and its law enforcement agencies prevented a major internal armed conflict in the country last week, President Vladimir Putin has said, referring to the aborted rebellion by Wagner Group chief Evgeny Prigozhin.

“In fact, you have stopped a civil war, acting precisely and cohesively,” he told a group of service members, who gathered at the Kremlin on Tuesday to receive state decorations for their endeavors last Friday and Saturday.

Lukashenko Confirms Wagner Leader's Arrival In Belarus, Urged Putin Not To Kill Him

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko confirmed Tuesday that Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin has arrived in Belarus three days following the armed uprising he led against Russia's defense ministry, which has grabbed world headlines.

"Yes, today he’s in Belarus," Lukashenko was cited in state-run Belta news agency as saying. "We’ll help you if you want to stay with us for a while at [Wagner’s] expense of course," the Belarusian leader said. Ironically the words came the same day President Putin revealed in a speech that the Russian government paid Wagner group about $1 billion in contracts over the past year of conflict in Ukraine.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has relayed details of his purported mediation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and rebellious mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin to settle the short-lived coup attempt. “At 10:10, he (Putin) called and informed me in detail about the situation that is happening in Russia. “He asked several questions, including how to counteract this, and I realised that the situation was complicated,” Mr Lukashenko said at a military awards ceremony in Minsk. He went on to claim that Putin had decided to eliminate Prigozhin, but Lukashenko had intervened and "suggested not to rush."

After this weekend’s whirlwind events in Russia we’re left with a lot more questions than answers about what happened with Wagner Group’s Yevgeny Prigozhin’s abortive rebellion against Moscow. I’m not here to answer any of those questions definitively because we’ll never really know.

That said, if what I think happened is anything close to the truth then this may be one of the greatest non-battlefield victories in modern history.

Let’s start with what we know. Prigozhin’s been running his mouth for months about lack of support from the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) while his boys did all the heavy lifting in Bakhmut. His issues with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu are pretty well known. It’s also likely that there’s zero love loss between Prigozhin and General Valeri Gerasimov either.

The US Treasury Department on Tuesday has announced new anti-Wagner sanctions in a belated attempt to cut off the group's weapons funding, at a moment the Russian government has essentially pardoned the mercenary outfit for treasonous actions. It remains unclear what role Wagner will play inside Russia, if any, as its founder Yevegny Prigozhin sets up shop in neighboring Belarus after President Lukashenko mediated a deal on his behalf.

The fresh sanctions, announced Tuesday, target four companies accused of "gold dealing" on Wagner's behalf as well as an individual Washington says made "weapons deals" tied to Wagner.

NATO members must not underestimate Russia, despite the brief crisis created by the failed mutiny of the Wagner private military company, the bloc’s Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Tuesday.

“We all saw the events in Russia over the last [few] days. These are internal Russian matters,” Stoltenberg said at a press conference in The Hague, arguing that the rebellion was a sign of “new tensions” in the country.

Washington should supply Kiev with artillery-delivered cluster bombs, a group of US Congress representatives told President Joe Biden in a letter last week, Foreign Policy reported on Monday. The lawmakers urged the White House to put what they called America’s "vast arsenal" of the highly controversial munitions to its "intended use." 

Cluster bombs carry smaller explosive submunitions that are released in flight and scattered across a target area, typically used against personnel and lightly armored vehicles. According to Foreign Policy, the US-designed bombs, also known as dual-purpose improved conventional munitions (DPICMs), can penetrate four to eight inches (10 to 20 centimeters) of armor.
