Fresh missile attacks on Crimean Bridge foiled, local reports say

The head of the region Sergey Aksenov has reported that two projectiles have been downed and the key transport infrastructure remains intact

Russian air defenses have shot down two incoming missiles in the vicinity of the Crimean Bridge, the region’s head, Sergey Aksenov, reported on his Telegram channel on Saturday. Photos and videos have been circulating on social media depicting what appears to be several columns of smoke coming from the transport infrastructure.

In his post, Aksenov wrote: “Air defenses have shot down two enemy rockets in the Kerch Strait area.” He added that the “Crimean Bridge has not been damaged,” and called on local residents to remain calm.

Air Defense Activated Over Crimea as Russian Forces Repel Ukraine Strikes Near Kupyansk

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Air defense systems were activated over several regions of Crimea overnight, Oleg Kryuchkov, an adviser to Crimean head Sergey Aksyonov, said in the early hours of Saturday.

"Air defense systems have worked over different regions of Crimea. Please remain calm and trust only verified sources of information," Kryuchkov said on Telegram on Saturday morning. Traffic across the Crimean Bridge was temporarily suspended for about two hours during the night.

The Russian Defense Ministry subsequently confirmed that Ukrainian forces had attempted to carry out an attack using 20 drones, all of which were destroyed.

NATO Member Poland Now Says 10,000 More Troops To Bolster Belarus Border

Poland has been very vocal in denouncing Russia's Wagner group setting up bases in neighboring Belarus, following the mutiny events of June 23-24 inside Russia. In the last several weeks, Warsaw has been bolstering its border defense force, also amid ultra-provocative Belarusian training exercises in the region. 

Initially Poland early in the week said it would be deploying 2,000 additional troops to the border, but Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak has newly announced a much bigger increase of 10,000 troops.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has sacked all of the regional military officials responsible for the country's conscription campaign following a string of corruption scandals. Those who were not involved in any quid pro quo schemes can keep their military rank only if they head to the frontline. 

The Ukrainian leader announced the purge on Friday, after holding a ‘special’ meeting of the National Security and Defense Council, which focused on the results of an inspection of the country’s military recruitment offices.

Following last weekend's Ukraine peace talks hosted in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Turkey now says it might play host to the next round. The Saudi talks didn't produce much of anything, also given Russia wasn't even represented, and it was pushed reportedly to get BRICS countries off the fence and more firmly in support of Kiev.

Turkish daily Hurriyet indicated in a fresh report, "it should not be surprising if Turkey becomes the host of the third round." The report hailed Turkey as a host nation that "can openly and clearly speak to all sides" of the conflict.

YouTube bans Scott Ritter

The site has completely scrubbed the channel of the former US intelligence officer, who has repeatedly voiced support for Russia

YouTube has terminated the account of former US spy Scott Ritter and deleted all of his videos on the platform. According to Ritter, the Google-owned social media giant accused his channel of violating the terms of service.

Writing on X (formerly known as Twitter), Ritter stated that his channel, ‘The Scott Ritter Show’, through which he attempted to “import Russian voices to an American/Western audience,” had been flagged for ‘hate speech’ and taken down without prior warning or any specific examples of the offense.

UPDATE: Hawaii fires leave Lahaina in ruins as death toll rises to 53

Residents of Maui awoke Thursday and began surveying the devastation caused by the island’s worst wildfires, a series of fast-moving blazes that killed at least 53 people and turned the historic town of Lahaina into a smoking ruin.

The Maui wildfires, which haven’t been fully contained, are the deadliest to occur in the United States since 2018, when 85 people died in northern California’s Camp Fire, the most destructive in the state’s history. The death toll and damage from the fires in Hawaii were unimaginable, officials said. Hawaii Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke (D) said Lahaina had been “decimated” and “forever changed.” The fires are testing Maui residents “like never before,” Mayor Richard Bissen said. “We are grieving with each other during this inconsolable time.”
