Nuland Confesses Ukraine Has ’Biological Research Facilities,’ Fears Russia Could Seize Them 

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry said it has been closely monitoring the bioweapons programs that were developed by the Pentagon in post-Soviet countries. In particular, a “network” of more than 30 biological laboratories was formed on the territory of Ukraine, according to new findings.

Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland admitted on Tuesday that Ukraine hosts what she called “biological research facilities,” adding that the United States is concerned they could come under the control of Russian forces.

“Ukraine has biological research facilities, which in fact we are now quite concerned Russian forces may be seeking to gain control of, so we are working with the Ukrainians on how they can prevent any of those research materials from falling into the hands of Russian forces should they approach,” Nuland said during a Senate hearing on Ukraine.

China has slammed the U.S. military for operating “dangerous biolabs” in Ukraine, and urged the U.S. military to disclose information about the purposes of the biolabs in order to ensure their safety.

“U.S. biolabs in Ukraine have indeed attracted much attention recently,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said Tuesday in response to a question from a local reporter, adding that “all dangerous pathogens in Ukraine must be stored in these labs and all research activities are led by the U.S. side.” 

Russian MoD Makes Public Documents Confirming Preparation by Kiev of Offensive Operation in Donbass 

As Russia's special operation to demilitarize and de-Nazify Ukraine continues, the Ministry of Defence on Tuesday stated that Russian armed forces had destroyed 2581 military targets in Ukraine since the launch of the operation on 24 February.

Russia's Ministry of Defence has made public documents confirming preparation by Kiev authorities of an offensive operation in Donbass in March.

"In the course of a special military operation, secret documents of the command of the National Guard of Ukraine came into the possession of the Russian military. These documents confirm covert preparation by the Kiev regime of an offensive operation in Donbas scheduled for March 2022," said official representative of the Russian Defence Ministry, Major General Igor Konashenkov.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Tuesday that her country would “not be able to move”without Russian oil imports. While the UK and US announced they would cease buying Moscow’s oil, Germany is too reliant to quit.

"A third of our oil imports come from Russia," Baerbock told the video channel of the newspaper Bild. “If we stopped these straight away, then tomorrow we would not be able to move in Germany anymore.”

Hundreds of Ships Trapped by War in Ukraine, Endangering Sailors and the Global Supply Chain 

The crew of a Bangladeshi freighter stranded near the Ukrainian port of Olvia heard an explosion, then the deck was engulfed in flames.

A missile struck the MV Banglar Samriddhi at 5:25 p.m. last Wednesday, killing one crew member and leaving several others badly burned, according to Bangladeshi crew members, their families and Ukrainian authorities. She was the fifth merchant ship to be hit by artillery off the coast of Ukraine since the Russian invasion.

The war in Ukraine has severely hampered navigation in the Black Sea, with far-reaching consequences for international transport and global supply chains. Dozens of cargo ships are stuck in the Ukrainian port of Mykolaiv, marine trackers said. According to maritime historians, more than 3,500 sailors are stranded on some 200 ships in Ukrainian ports, according to London-based maritime tracker Windward Ltd.

The result is the closure of the world’s second largest grain exporting region. Ukraine accounts for 16% of world corn exports and, together with Russia, 30% of wheat exports. World wheat prices have jumped more than 55% since the week before the invasion.

Russia has a solution for how to deal with that: a senior member of Russia's ruling party has proposed nationalizing foreign-owned factories that shut down operations in the country over what the Ukraine invasion.

Toyota, Nike and IKEA are among the companies that have announced shutdowns of stores and factories in Russia in order to put pressure on the Kremlin to stop its invasion of neighboring Ukraine. In a statement published on Monday evening on the United Russia website, the secretary of the ruling party's general council Andrei Turchak said that shutting operations was a "war" against the citizens of Russia.
