I for one paid as I learned for 5 of my seven years of night school while 2 of those years if school was paid for by a firmer employer. I studied manufacturing technologies and became a journeyman Tool & Die Maker and Master Miniature Electronics Model Maker. After 4 years of night school at age 28 in 1988, I bought out a retired Sunbeam Model Maker and went on to build a Tool & Die based Miniature Electronics Model Shop while raising 8 children. It was an uphill battle although I managed to hire 8 to 10 full time helpers who all learned as they earned from our small company where I consulted for Product Design Engineers while fabricating their most challenging components and sub assemblies for bench & field testing. By 2001 our government jumped into bed with Communist China for profit and within 6 months our business was CRUSHED after 11 years of growth by opportunity thst vanished overseas. After a year of downsizing and struggling to make ends meet I sent my resume on a Wednesday to 2 if my customers. 8 got an offer from one on Thursday and the other on Friday. Within a week I joined the workforce. After 12 years if working for Corporate America in 3 states we moved back home and I resumed Contract Work because I thought globalism was failing. We found and moved to a farm where I set up shop in a barn doing contract work while working on my own inventions. Sales didn't grow enough to get excited although we were independent again and our children grown. Today most of our opportunities are in Aerosoace and the majority of open quotes are for Wartime parts that are very challenging to make. There are so few Independent Skilled people left in The USA that somehow we have gotten by in the barn shop with old equipment. Two of our 7 Sons became Tool & Die Maker journeyman and one is now a Tool &:Die Designer. I pray that we start seeing peacetime opportunities that allow our shop to grow to allow a few of our Sons to carry on our business as we reach retirement age. The version of America I grew up in was killed by Greed & Corruption. Now we are surrounded by unskilled educated idiots unwilling to get their hands dirty. #FreedomIsNotFree Trade shouldn't be Free either. You can't buy weapons from your enemy during war. What a story of your life. Even though your business was crushed, you rose up again and eight children to bring up too. I'm in UK and same problems here too. I'm female but used to watch/assist my engineer dad fix stuff by making new parts or improvising. Today, most young adults can't change a wheel on a car, replace a fuse or sharpen a knife. However, it's the education system to blame, putting useless paper degrees and IT skills above practical ones. Trades people looked on as lesser than MAs, BAs. I hope your prayers come true.
