We were taught to use sources like Cochrane Collaboration, which I did for my article. It was their most recent systematic review of the evidence for the flu vax (this would've been the 2013 or 2014 publication). Systematic review is considered the gold standard for evidence, as it pools data from multiple studies, thereby increasing the strength of the evidence.
The findings were: The preventive effect of parenteral inactivated influenza vaccine on healthy adults is small: at least 40 people would need vaccination to avoid one ILI case (95% confidence interval (CI) 26 to 128) and 71 people would need vaccination to prevent one case of influenza (95% CI 64 to 80). Vaccination shows no appreciable effect on working days lost or hospitalisation.
When I presented these facts, the pushback I got from several of my classmates was unbelievable! They acted like I was just stating my personal opinion, not a freaking research study from one of the most reliable sources out there. I will say that most of them giving me a hard time were the younger ones...the ones who got their RN and worked for maybe a year or two before going for their NP (vs. those of us who had been practicing RNs for 10-15 years). Not quite sure what to make of that, but it does give me pause. Unfortunately the Gates Foundation now gives Cochrane money, so Idk how much I trust them any more, but they used to be the best there was, in part because they were independent.
