I remember well as a child in the 60's the "increase in the cancer rate" worries. Back then it was assumed to be toxic exposure from industry or commercial sources, explosion of cancer causing chemicals in water and air, toxic workplace exposure, etc.
All my relatives worked in the Fiberglass plant and got asbestosis and lung cancer, never lived long enough to have heart attacks. Of course everyone smoked like chimneys and drank like fishes. I never realized by the 80's the "cancer bump" was gone.
My point is we have cleaned up a lot of toxic exposure that existed during the 60's and I am sure that was a contributing factor. All those toxic workplaces were forced to clean up, at least in the US. Also, people don't smoke anymore, or drink nearly as much.
