A bit of a hedge here. I've been living in Japan for 43 years, and though my best friends are Japanese, I would hesitate to label them, or even many more Japanese who are not my friends, as having an 'oriental mindset'.
I acknowledge your own hedge with 'often' ... but an aversion to personal liberty seems closer to some fundamental hierarchical pathology common to humanity in general.
I don't have a clear idea of where this comes from. Perhaps it is the self-destructive tendency of scale that Joseph Tainter pointed to in 'The Collapse of Complex Societies.
And some research indicates individual temperamental predispositions at work. Perhaps 'personal liberty' or 'freedom' is just a function of the ups and downs of life.

When the COVID-19 injectables were launched in 2021, the city government sent everyone an information sheet together with one of their PR newsletters. This document explained that COVID-19 vaccination was voluntary and the decision to get injected or not was entirely at the discretion of the individual. Moreover, it was illegal to discriminate against individuals on the basis of their vaccination status in public places or in employment situations.
There was also an explanation that a person's vaccination status was private, and that some people were unable to be vaccinated for health reasons such as those who were prone to anaphylaxis or who suffered from autoimmune conditions, and so people should not try to coerce others to get vaccinated or even to ask others about their status.
The above attitude didn't extend to frontline health workers, lamentably, but all in all, I thought Japan's attitude was rather enlightened, in stark contrast to the situation in most of Europe, the whole of North America, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, not to mention Singapore.
What we learned from COVID-19 was that the occidental mindset (if there is such a thing) often ignores personal Liberty too.

I can't locate reliable statistics off hand, but I know many young people who didn't take any COVID shots, while among senior citizens, triple vaccination was close to universal.

I assume that, officially, the Japanese government doesn't consider replicon vaccines as particularly dangerous, as it has authorized the use of this technology in COVID-19 vaccines. Same goes for mRNA vaccines in general. They (the bureaucrats) don't have a problem with it.

A bit of a hedge here. I've been living in Japan for 43 years, and though my best friends are Japanese, I would hesitate to label them, or even many more Japanese who are not my friends, as having an 'oriental mindset'.
I acknowledge your own hedge with 'often' ... but an aversion to personal liberty seems closer to some fundamental hierarchical pathology common to humanity in general.
I don't have a clear idea of where this comes from. Perhaps it is the self-destructive tendency of scale that Joseph Tainter pointed to in 'The Collapse of Complex Societies.
And some research indicates individual temperamental predispositions at work. Perhaps 'personal liberty' or 'freedom' is just a function of the ups and downs of life.

Not much personal liberty to be found among Amazon workers. Seems to be common in large populations everywhere, especially when driven by fear and desire.
Just guessing, but the sociopaths behind Japan Inc. have just more finely crafted the art of propaganda and social engineering than most of the West. China is the test case and role model for what the jet-setting Davos crowd has in mind.

Snap! I've also been living in Japan for 43 years.
When the COVID-19 injectables were launched in 2021, the city government sent everyone an information sheet together with one of their PR newsletters. This document explained that COVID-19 vaccination was voluntary and the decision to get injected or not was entirely at the discretion of the individual. Moreover, it was illegal to discriminate against individuals on the basis of their vaccination status in public places or in employment situations.
There was also an explanation that a person's vaccination status was private, and that some people were unable to be vaccinated for health reasons such as those who were prone to anaphylaxis or who suffered from autoimmune conditions, and so people should not try to coerce others to get vaccinated or even to ask others about their status.
The above attitude didn't extend to frontline health workers, lamentably, but all in all, I thought Japan's attitude was rather enlightened, in stark contrast to the situation in most of Europe, the whole of North America, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, not to mention Singapore.
What we learned from COVID-19 was that the occidental mindset (if there is such a thing) often ignores personal Liberty too.
Government in Singapore has always had an authoritarian streak. Arguably, the government sees itself as a parent and treats the citizens like children. One example, the sale and importation of chewing gum has been banned there since 1992, although you can still chew it legally if you can manage to get it. There are also the no feeding the pigeons law, the no jaywalking law, the no peeing in elevators law, the no littering law, the no smoking in public law, the no connecting to another person's wifi law, the no playing musical instruments in public in a manner likely to annoy other people law........ There was even a ban on long hair for males back in the day.
Against that backdrop, the no refusing mandated injections law comes as no surprise at all.

Yeah, I hear you about authoritarianism. I did a post-career gig as an ALT for a dozen public schools in Kunitachi, reaffirming that TESOL was not the right choice for grad school. Elementary teachers were decent, but by the time the kids got out of the juken senso of Jr. High, most were somewhere on a spectrum of indifference to hatred for English. Compliance to authority took top priority, and like the students, I was expected to wait for the teachers' orders.
And speaking of schools, you probably heard the news coming from the next town over (Tachikawa). Yep, the anal-retentive micro-managing over here really does a job on their heads, until it doesn't. Then you have another Akihabara-Kato / Sagamihara stabbing event, or Aum Shinrikyo. Ha. I still remember when Asahara Shoko was campaigning for political office and had his girls hang around the stations in elephant head masks and sing his song.
But back to the plandemic ... I'd read that Japan was the most heavily vaxxed nation, and without any need for the draconian crackdowns seen in 5 Eyes countries. And later read that before Twitter became X, the Japanese govt. ranked highest in the world in squashing 'disinformation' tweets. Education and control of journalism walking hand-in-hand. I think Reporters Without Borders consistently ranks Japan around 70th in the world for freedom of press.

For example, how the plandemic revealed how similar the managerial style of the governance of China was to that of America, and the 'freedom' of bottom-up democratic process largely a carefully crafted illusion. I think Chomsky said the same in 'Manufacturing Consent' ... back when Chomsky was Chomsky.
But another thing Lyon said shook me a bit ... referring to Karl Popper as one of the fathers of the managerial state. I ran the biology labs at TUJ for about 20 years, and drew on Popper (falsifiability as a test of science) and Kuhn (scientists are real people with all-too-human flaws) to motivate students who would normally not be interested.
Now, I'm going to have to go back and take a closer look at 'The Open Society and Its Enemies' and possibly distance myself from one of my idols. Meh, other than for the therapeutic effect of continually trying to cleanse myself of cognitive dissonance, few really care about what I think. Even after 43 years in Japan, here at the ward office, trying to help turn a community cafe into something of use to the locals, my identity as listed in the newsletter is 'gaikkojin'. I will have to correct that at the next meeting as 'Okazari no gaikkojin'. 🤣

The Japanese, on the whole, seem to be quite trusting of vaccines and other pharmaceutical products. here are several reasons for this. Japan is a country with a majority of older people these days. The Japanese are generally a conservative people, and older Japanese tend to be even more conservative, so doctors and health authorities still enjoy high status, trust and credibility. and the Japanese are also generally conformist, and tend to go along with the crowd.
When told that there was a potentially deadly disease and a magical way to keep safe, most people were happy to get jabbed as soon as they saw most other people were getting jabbed. Eventually, about 80% of the population took at least two shots and over 70% took three or more. For the over 65, it was probably around 90% or more, which was balanced against the decision of something like a third to a half of the under-40s not to get jabbed at all. I can't locate reliable statistics off hand, but I know many young people who didn't take any COVID shots, while among senior citizens, triple vaccination was close to universal.

I did read The Open Society and Its Enemies around about 1990, and I still have the book on my shelves. But I found it hard going at the time. Perhaps it's due for a re-read. Popper is one of my favorite 20th century thinkers, though. His political philosophy appeals to the libertarian within me, and I am fascinated by his theory of "Three Worlds," which I am instinctively drawn to on the basis of my own experience. It would pain me to have to throw Popper into the Chomsky basket.
Anally-retentive micro-managing? Yes, I've noticed there's a lot of it about. The system over here certainly knows how to keep the individual under psychological pressure. Especially if they want to get ahead in a career or a profession. It's a wonder more men and boys don't go bang, IMHO. Although the girls seem to get off lighter, don't you think? Well, Neil, in most countries these days, we have pharmaceutical companies that develop and market drugs and other medical interventions; government agencies that grant or withhold permission to use them, doctors and other medical staff who administer them, and individuals who (ideally) choose whether or not to receive them—with nefarious entities such as the WHO, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the DOD looming in the background.
I assume that, officially, the Japanese government doesn't consider replicon vaccines as particularly dangerous, as it has authorized the use of this technology in COVID-19 vaccines. Same goes for mRNA vaccines in general. They (the bureaucrats) don't have a problem with it.
However, I don't know of any attempt to mandate replicon vaccines, and I don't think they are very popular. According to a letter that appeared in the Lancet, in Japan, "at least several hundred beauty salons, gyms, or restaurants have refused entry to people who have received the replicon vaccine, and there have also been cases of medical clinics refusing to allow vaccinated people into their facilities."
This is an interesting conundrum with Chomskyan implications. Are we in favor of freedom of association for everyone, or only for people whose vaccination choices we approve of? I'm aghast when a business operator or a government or a performer such as Neil Young or Rod Stewart prohibits the entry of people who are unvaccinated against whatever the current thing is. But I am equally aghast when similar prohibitions are aimed at those who are vaccinated.

Yes, you are right: it is a rumour, but the rumour is so terrifying that it warrants caution. I sympathize with the beauty salons, gyms and restaurants, at least until we find out how true the rumours are.
But I wonder if we will ever find out if the replicon rumors are true? If there is limited spread, then perhaps we might be able to protect ourselves by avoiding direct contact with the vaxed; but if the spread is unlimited, then everyone will be affected in time, as is supposedly the case with respiratory viruses.
I know a lot of people are saying viruses don't exist, so a better analogy might be tree pollen. During the pollen season of certain plants, everyone breathes in the pollen, but only a minority develop symptoms. A healthy immune system is a terrible thing to disregulate.
I'm also reminded of spike protein shedding. Officially, this isn't a thing, but many unvaxxed people report symptoms when interacting with the vaxxed. However, most unvaxxed people interact with the vaxxed at least from time to time and report nothing. Could it be that some are allergic to shedded spike protein and others aren't?

And in hospitals, general practice, dental, and other clinics, both the staff and the patients are required to wear masks to this day. While in banks, supermarkets, and many other shops, the staff are masked all day while the customers get to choose.
None of this has anything to do with preventing infections, and none of it is government mandated. It's basically a form of cosplay that is being forced on staff by their employers in the name of etiquette.
I keep asking myself, "When will this madness end?" But the fact is, many Japanese people enjoy masking up, or at least they are not bothered by doing it. A lot of them are masked while out walking the dog, or when driving alone in their car. Although some of this could be to prevent exposure hay fever-causing pollen or to allow women to go out without wearing makeup.
I can't understand this sort of behavior because whenever I wear a mask, I hate it and feel it difficult to breathe, and the skin beneath the mask itches. So it's seems a bit masochistic to me for people to wear them when they aren't obliged to.
Yeah I knew, I even saw some in 2000 last time I was there. In Mexico everyone stopped wearing them except teenage girls, I knew from talking with some in 2020-21 that it was to cover up pimples, but those were mostly caused by the mask in the first place. That is so utterly untrue. I've been to Singapore so many times I can barely remember how many any longer. Lived in Malaysia for 5 years, so did trips to Sing and back. Stayed with friends and such. Never have I experience anyone being forcibly stopped for a haircut if it was too long. Tbh, Singaporeans are some of the most hospitable and nice people I've been travelling amongst in the world.

This really shouldn't be a surprise. I'm only surprised they didn't do it during covid. My sister lives in Singapore and I've been there a couple of times.
