Thousands Buried in Mass Graves After Libya Flood, Death Toll Could Rise to 20,000

Thousands of people have been buried in mass graves in the city of Derna, Libyan officials said Thursday, as search teams continue to search the ruins left by devastating floods. Up to 20,000 people are feared dead, a toll that could largely have been avoided, according to the U.N.

A deluge of rainfall from an unusually strong Mediterranean storm flooded several towns across eastern Libya on Tuesday and caused two dams outside the port city of Derna to collapse.

Libya’s attorney general has been asked by senior politicians to launch an urgent inquiry into the catastrophic floods that have killed tens of thousands of people, including into allegations local officials imposed a curfew on the night Storm Daniel struck.

The Libyan Red Crescent put the death toll at more than 11,000 people, with nearly 20,000 still missing, the highest estimate yet from an official source. It said almost 2,000 bodies were swept into the sea by the floods.

The leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) saw Russia's Tu-160, Tu-95MS and Tu-22M3 bombers. These aircraft form the air component of Russia's strategic nuclear forces.

Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko on Friday ordered the closure of 74 churches belonging to the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), citing its alleged “direct ties” to the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Klitschko’s decree is similar to that used to seize the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, or Monastery of the Caves, which Ukrainian police stormed last month. The world-famous holy site, which is nearly 1,000 years old, was handed over to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, a rival organization set up by the government in 2018.

French ambassador to Niger 'held hostage' in embassy, President Macron says

President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday that France's envoy to Niger is living like a hostage in the French embassy and accused military rulers of blocking food deliveries to the mission.

The ambassador is living off "military rations", Macron told reporters in the eastern town of Semur-en-Auxois.

"As we speak, we have an ambassador and diplomatic staff who are literally being held hostage in the French embassy," he said. "They are preventing food deliveries," he said, in an apparent reference to Niger's new military rulers. "He is eating military rations."

US-Saudi Arms 'Megadeal' Collapses Over Russia, China Links

US weapons maker RTX, formerly known as Raytheon Technologies, scrubbed a multibillion deal with Saudi firm Scopa Defense earlier this year over "concerns" that the latter was pursuing business with sanctioned Russian and Chinese companies, according to people familiar with the deal that spoke with the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

In 2022, RTX and Scopa signed a memorandum of understanding to build a factory in the kingdom for air defense systems to protect Riyadh from airstrikes. The plan reportedly called for installing radars and multiple air defense systems with an investment of $25 billion in the kingdom and $17 worth of sales.

Blinken: Peace deal with Saudi Arabia must include Palestinian statehood

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was interviewed by the Pod Save the World podcast Wednesday, saying that normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia must necessarily include a peace deal with the Palestinians and the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Dead Sea inscription confirms biblical reference researcher claims

The announcement last week of researchers finding a cache of four 1,900-year-old Roman swords in a cave in the Ein Gedi Nature Reserve in the Judean Desert overshadowed what may have been an even more remarkable find discovered in the same cave: a paleo-Hebrew inscription written in ink on a stalactite in the ancient script typical of the First Temple period.

About 50 years ago a paleo-Hebrew inscription was discovered in a cave near Ein Gedi. The partial inscription was painted on a stalactite with carbonite ink around the 7th century BCE. Dr. Asaf Gayer decided it was time to revisit the site to re-photograph the inscription using multispectral imaging.
