Putin Orders First-Ever Nationwide Nuclear Drill, Prepares Bomb-Test At Arctic Circle

Russia will hold its first nationwide drill simulating widespread nuclear strikes on the country, daily Magyar Hírlap writes.

The one-day nuclear attack exercise is based on the assumption that NATO will launch a nuclear strike on Russia, destroying 70 percent of Russian housing and life-support facilities. In the scenario, martial law is imposed in the country and a full-scale mobilization is ordered. The test will also model the secondary threat posed by damage to nuclear power plants and other key facilities.

State and regional authorities will have to organize emergency rescue teams to provide food, medical supplies and protection against radiation. According to the preparatory document, there is a need to prepare for an escalation of war, including a global conflict involving nuclear powers.

The US and its allies will continue to support Kiev in its conflict with Moscow, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a press briefing on Monday. She promised more aid to Ukraine, after lawmakers decided not to include military assistance to Kiev in a short-term spending bill passed last week.

Jean-Pierre denied that support for Ukraine among Western nations is waning. “There is [a] strong, very strong international coalition behind Ukraine,” she told journalists.

The continued funding of Ukraine aid has proven to be a sticking point for hardline Republicans intent on redirecting government funds to domestic matters, such as the growing migrant concern at the US-Mexico border. In fact, the topic more recently became a key issue in the recent stopgap debate.

The Pentagon recently issued a dire warning to Congress, revealing it is rapidly running out of funds to replace its weapons stockpile that the US had earlier pulled from in order fulfill shipments to Ukraine.

Ukraine has lost $24 billion because the US has refused to include aid to Kiev in its short-term spending bill, an analysis of the country's budget data shows.

Last month, the White House asked the US Senate for $24 billion for Ukraine for the 2024 fiscal year, from 1 October 2023 to 30 September 2024. The Senate, however, proposed to allocate $4.5 billion for the Pentagon and $1.65 billion for the State Department to Ukraine.

Taiwanese prosecutors are investigating allegations that information about its first domestically produced submarine was leaked to Beijing. The vessel in question, named ‘Hai Kun’ in Chinese and ‘Narwhal’ in English, was unveiled on Thursday.

The inquiry was opened after Indigenous Defense Submarine program chief Huang Shu-kuang told the media that a contractor that had failed to secure the bid had leaked the information about the project to Beijing.

A surprising number of French people support the idea of placing a limit on the number of times people can fly in their lifetime in the name of saving the environment, with 41 percent of French citizens overall in favor of banning individuals from taking more than four flights – ever.

This is according to a poll of French residents conducted by the research firm Consumer Science and Analytics Institute. The proposed limit would apply to both business and leisure travel.
