Islamic State terrorists kill 93, injure hundreds in Moscow concert hall shooting

The United States had warned Russia on March 8 that "extremists" had imminent plans for an attack in Moscow.

At least 93 people were killed in an attack on Friday near Moscow, Russia's Investigative Committee said on Saturday, citing preliminary data, and warned that the number of victims was expected to rise further. Camouflage-clad gunmen opened fire with automatic weapons at concertgoers near Moscow on Friday in an attack claimed by Islamic State terrorists. Islamic State, the terrorist group that once sought control over swathes of Iraq and Syria, claimed responsibility for the attack, the group's Telegram channel said. The United States has intelligence confirming Islamic State's claim of responsibility for a deadly shooting at a concert near Moscow, a US official said on Friday.

Three children have died as a result of a terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall outside Moscow on Friday night, according to hospital data posted on the Moscow Region’s Health Ministry website. At least five children were among those hospitalized after the massacre, officials have said. The venue was booked for a rock concert when the atrocity took place, with heavily armed gunmen breaking into the building and indiscriminately shooting visitors. They then reportedly set fire to the building.

The U.S. Embassy in Moscow warned Americans to avoid going to concerts in Moscow just weeks before gunmen launched an attack at a concert venue on Friday.

Several gunmen opened fire at Crocus City Hall, a large music venue in the Moscow area, leaving an unknown number of victims injured. Many details about the shooting, including who the suspected shooters are and what their motive may have been, remained unclear as responders were still at the scene. Just weeks prior on March 7, the U.S. Embassy issued a warning telling Americans to not go to concert venues. "The Embassy is monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and U.S. citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours," the alert reads.

At least 40 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in a mass shooting and firebombing attack on the Crocus City Call concert venue outside Moscow on Friday, the Russian Federal Security Service has said.

Retired FSB Lieutenant Colonel Alexei Filatov has told Sputnik he is certain of who is behind the attack on Crocus City Hall, and commented on the responsible course Western countries could now take to deescalate the situation. “This was clearly an act of terrorism, a prepared terrorist act. The Ukrainian Security Service is behind it. I am 100 percent certain,” Filatov said, commenting on the incident.

The perpetrators and organizers of Friday’s terrorist attack at a Moscow concert venue must be hunted down without mercy, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has insisted. At least 60 people were killed and over 100 wounded when several men armed with assault rifles opened fire inside the Crocus City Hall and then proceeded to set the concert venue on fire. Medvedev is currently deputy chair of the National Security Council. In a Telegram post on Friday evening, he sent condolences to the families of those killed and encouragement to the relatives of the wounded.

The White House has condemned a major terrorist attack outside Moscow which unfolded on Friday evening, as masked gunmen breached a concert hall northwest of the Russian capital, leaving scores dead and injured. Unofficial reports indicate that at least a dozen people have been killed in the attack at the Crocus City Hall, with around 130 wounded, after the gunmen opened fire at the venue and detonated explosives which set the building ablaze.

Russia Confirms Increase Of Artillery Shell Production By 150% In Past Year

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said Thursday that Russia’s production of artillery shells has increased by nearly 2.5 times over the past year as Moscow is significantly out-producing the West.

Shoigu also said that Russia was producing components for artillery at a rate of 22 times what it could make last year. "Speaking about manufacturing of artillery munitions, the volume of production of components to such ammunition was increased by almost 22 times," he said. Shoigu’s comments came after CNN reported that Russia was producing nearly three times as many artillery shells than the US and Europe combined.

The Defense Ministry in Moscow has yet to comment on the assertions. Reports on the ground described it as the most powerful attack for many months. One Russian missile strike targeted the Dnieper Hydro Power Plant (HPP) in the Ukrainian-controlled city of Zaporozhye, according to Ukrhydroenergo. The company stated that the facility had been hit and that a fire was raging at the site.

Russia’s Federal Financial Monitoring Service (Rosfinmonitoring) has expanded its designation of persons and organizations deemed to be involved in extremist activities or terrorism to include “the international LGBT social movement and its structural units.” The updated list can be found on the agency’s website. The move follows a ruling by the country’s Supreme Court last November that upheld the Ministry of Justice’s recognition of the “international LGBT movement” as extremist.

Russia & China Strike Shipping Deal With Houthis To Ensure Safe Vessel Transits, Report Says 

According to Bloomberg's sources, Russia and China have sealed a deal with Iran-backed Houthis to allow their commercial vessels to transit the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden without fear of drone and or missile attacks. 

One of the sources said China and Russia reached a deal with diplomats in Oman with Mohammed Abdel Salam, one of the Houthis' top political leaders. They said the safe passage of vessels is in exchange for the Houthis' political support at the United Nations Security Council. Bloomberg noted, "It's not entirely clear how that support would be manifested, but it could include blocking more resolutions against the group."

The United Nations Security Council on Friday failed to pass a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza as part of a hostage deal after Russia and China vetoed the measure proposed by the United States. The resolution, which Guyana also abstained from voting for, called for an immediate and sustained ceasefire lasting roughly six weeks that would protect civilians and allow for the delivery of humanitarian assistance.

“The historic ban on US funding to UNRWA that passed today with an overwhelming bipartisan support, demonstrates what we knew all along: UNRWA is part of the problem and can not be part of the solution,” Katz writes on X, formerly Twitter. “UNRWA will not be a part of Gaza’s landscape in the aftermath of Hamas. Thousands of UNRWA employees are involved in Hamas terror activities and their facilities were used for terrorist purposes.”

Israel foils major terror attack by suspects who crossed Jordanian border

Two suspects who crossed from Jordan with weapons and are suspected of planning to carry out a major attack were arrested Friday night near thesettlement of Petzael in the Jordan Valley, according to Israeli media. The pair were identified last night in the settlement of Petzael in the Jordan Valley, with one of them holding a Kalashnikov with a magazine. The security system still doesn't know to which group the pair belongs. An investigation has been opened into the case.

Pentagon Still Open to US Troops in Haiti

House Passes Pork-Filled Bill To Fully Fund Government

Update (1150ET):  With just hours to go before a shutdown, the House has passed the $1.2 trillion minibus bill, which will now head to the Senate.

The vote was 286-134, with 112 Republicans and 22 Dems against. All 100 Senators will need to agree to a vote to pass the bill before midnight. If this fails to happen, the government would be forced into a partial shutdown on Saturday morning. President Biden has urged Congress to pass it quickly so he can sign. "This hasn’t been a perfect process. But we should never let the perfect be the enemy of the good," said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) in response to the House passage. "This is a good result for the American people."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has agreed to remove social media posts and webpages that urged people to stop taking ivermectin to treat COVID-19, according to a settlement dated March 21. The FDA has already removed a page that said: “Should I take ivermectin to prevent or treat COVID-19? No.” Within 21 days, the FDA will remove another page titled, “why you should not use ivermectin to treat or prevent COVID-19,” according to the settlement announcement, which was filed with federal court in southern Texas.

Cancer fund only sent 1 cent of every $1 to patients, lawsuit alleges

The Women's Cancer Fund raised $18.3 million by vowing to help patients, telling donors that their money would help pay the living expenses of women going through treatment for the disease. But a new lawsuit from the FTC and 10 states allege that the bulk of the money instead went to pay the charity's president and for-profit fundraisers.

The lawsuit, filed on March 11 in federal court, alleges that the Women's Cancer Fund raised the money from 2017 to 2022 by making deceptive and misleading claims. In reality, the bulk of the donations went to the $775,139 salary of the charity's president, Gregory Anderson, and to pay for-profit fundraisers $15.55 million, as well as overhead expenses, the lawsuit alleges.

Global Population Set To Fall For First Time In 700 Years

A major study published in scientific journal The Lancet has found that the global population will start to fall within decades due to vastly reduced fertility rates and may never recover.

The study, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, found that by the year 2050, 155 of 204 countries are on course to have birth rates lower than required to sustain the population level. It notes that as of 2021, the “total fertility rate” worldwide was 2.23, hovering only just above the 2.1 children per woman needed to maintain population growth. That figure has fallen from 4.84 in 1950, with researchers predicting it will decrease to 1.83 in 2050 and go as low as 1.59 by 2100.

The Hastings Museum and Art Gallery is running an LGBTQ history exhibition funded by Arts Council England which claims that some birds are “queer” because they “change their sex from female to male.” The Telegraph notes that the claims about birds such as pheasants are completely unfounded and have no scientific basis. The exhibition, in association with a group called the Hastings Queer History Collective, further claims that arguments about “queer” behaviour in the animal world being “unnatural” are undermined by the behaviour of game birds.

Or getting treated?’

School districts across United States plan to close during solar eclipse over safety fears

Many schools across the U.S. are rethinking their class schedules for April 8, 2024 — the day a solar eclipse will hit North America.

The eclipse’s line of totality — the areas where the sun will experience total coverage — will span 15 states, according to NASA. The eclipse route will travel from Mexico, arching northeast from Texas to Ohio before reaching Canada and going back into Maine. Many school districts, and even some universities, that lie in the direct path of the eclipse have already planned to close school or cancel classes out of concern for students’ safety. Various schools in Texas, Indiana, Ohio, Vermont, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania reportedly plan to have alternative school schedules on April 8.

2,000 earthquakes in 24 hours off Canada coast suggest the ocean floor is ripping apart

Almost 2,000 earthquakes rocked a spot off the coast of Canada in a single day earlier this month, which could be a sign that new oceanic crust is about to be birthed via a deep sea magmatic rupture.

The quakes aren’t any threat to people. They’re relatively small and centered on a spot called the Endeavour site, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) off the coast of Vancouver Island. This spot hosts a number of hydrothermal vents and sits on the Juan de Fuca Ridge, where the ocean floor is spreading apart. This area is separate from the subduction zone — a region where one tectonic plate is sinking into the mantle underneath another plate — closer to the coast that can create large, destructive earthquakes, said Zoe Krauss, a doctoral candidate in marine geophysics in the University of Washington.
