Macron wants Crimea seized from Russia

No ‘lasting peace’ is possible without Ukraine gaining control of the Russian peninsula, the French president has claimed

Ukraine must regain control over all the territories it once held, including Russia’s Crimean Peninsula, French President Emmanuel Macron has said. Otherwise, no “lasting peace” will be possible, he claimed. The president made the remarks on Thursday in an interview with broadcasters TF2 and France 2, bluntly describing Russia as France’s “adversary.” At the same time, he insisted that Paris has not been “waging war on Russia” but merely “supporting” Kiev in the conflict.

He described Moscow as an “adversary” of France, but declined to brand it an “enemy.”

European countries intend to create yet another “capability coalition” to supply Ukrainian forces with long-range weapons, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Friday, echoing an initiative floated by French President Emmanuel Macron. During a joint press conference with Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Berlin on Friday, the German chancellor stated that the countries have agreed to expand their own production of military equipment and “procure even more weapons for Ukraine, on the overall world market.”

The West has been orchestrating a way to supply Ukraine with arms by using money from frozen Russian central bank assets for more than a year. Meanwhile, Moscow has maintained that any theft of their frozen assets will trigger a symmetrical response. On Friday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that European countries would use the windfall profits from nearly $300 billion in frozen Russian assets to enable their weapon purchases for Ukraine, according to a recent report from a New York City journal.

Patriot Missile Systems Too Complex and Expensive to Be Sent to Ukraine Without US Chaperones

While more and more US-supplied weapon systems are taken out by Russian forces in the Ukrainian conflict, the Pentagon vehemently denies the presence of US military personnel in Ukraine who may be operating and maintaining this hardware.

Though a spokesperson for the Pentagon told Russian media that there are no US personnel in Ukraine servicing Patriot missile launchers or some other US hardware, retired US Air Force Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski, a former analyst for the US Department of Defense, did not seem convinced by these claims. “I think the US government is lying, by omission and also directly, on this question of US servicemen operating or maintaining equipment, specifically the Patriot system, in Ukraine,” Kwiatkowski told Sputnik.

An electoral official in Russia has branded a wave of vandalism at Russian polling stations as terrorism, and called on law enforcement to severely punish such acts. On Friday – day one of Russia’s three-day nationwide presidential vote – there were several incidents in which people poured green dye into ballot boxes, or committed acts of arson. The offenders have been detained and face up to five years in prison.

Ukrainian authorities have begun mass evacuations of communities in the country's northern Sumy region close to the Russian border after extended periods of intense shelling of the area, local officials said on Friday.

The military administration of Sumy region, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said more than 180 residents of areas near the Velikopysarska community, next to the border, had been evacuated over the past three days.

Japan To Restart World's Largest Nuclear Power Plant

Japan is stepping up efforts to have local authorities approve the restart of the world’s biggest nuclear power plant, the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa facility north of Tokyo, Japanese newspaper Niigata Nippo reported on Friday.

Next week, Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ken Saito, is expected to ask the local governor of the Niigata prefecture to approve the restart of the power plant, according to the newspaper report. In the wake of the Fukushima disaster in 2011, Japan closed all its nuclear power plants that underwent rigorous safety checks and inspections. Kashiwazaki-Kariwa has been offline since 2012, while the Nuclear Regulation Authority in 2021 barred the plant’s operator, utility Tepco, from operating the facility due to safety breaches.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels have attacked more than 40 merchant vessels amid the ongoing war in Gaza and severed several undersea communication cables. The Biden administration's Operation Prosperity Guardian, a US-led naval coalition to shield commercial ships from drone and missile attacks, continues to fail as another ship was hit by a missile Friday.

"A merchant vessel has reported that they have been struck by a missile and the vessel has sustained some damage. The crew are reported safe and the vessel is proceeding to its next port of call," UK Maritime Trade Operations, a part of the navy that provides maritime, wrote on X. The attack on the vessel occurred around 0400 local time on Friday and 76 nautical miles west of the port city of Al Hudaydah. No details about the vessel's name or type of ship were released.

Qatar National Bank (QNB) and Qatar Charity (QC) are attempting to uncover the identities of confidential sources that supplied documents to lawyers representing the family of murdered US journalist Steven Sotloff, which allege the financial institutions – acting at the behest of Qatar’s royal family – wired hundreds of thousands of dollars to the ISIS judge who ordered Sotloff’s execution.

QNB and QC filed an application on March 12 in the US to obtain "limited discovery" of the law firm representing Sotloff’s family, specifically regarding the names of those who provided the bank records linking Doha to the murder. In an email to Bloomberg, the general counsel for QNB confirmed the filing and said the bank "is the victim of an effort to tarnish its reputation" and plans to hold the individuals "to account to the fullest extent of the law." Sotloff and another US journalist, James Foley, were beheaded in 2014 by ISIS in Syria. The terrorist group published videos of its executions online directed at US government officials.

Senior figures from Hamas and Yemen’s Houthi rebels held a rare meeting to discuss coordinating their actions against Israel, Palestinian factional sources tell AFP.

Hamas and the Houthis belong to the “axis of resistance,” a collection of Iran-backed movements hostile to Israel and the United States that also includes Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Iraqi militias. The Houthis have attacked Red Sea shipping for months since the Israel-Hamas war was triggered by the Palestinian terror group’s October 7 attack, saying they are targeting Israeli-linked vessels in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Netanyahu approves Rafah operation, Israeli officials to head to Qatar

An outbreak of violence on the Temple Mount, known to Muslims as al-Haram, al-Sharif could have impacted the possibility of a deal. 

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has approved a military operation for Rafahin Southern Gaza, that will also include the evacuation of civilians, his office said on Friday after the war cabinet met in the early afternoon. The Rafah operation has been one of the levers Israel has used to pressure Hamas to make a deal for the return of the remaining 134 captives held in the enclave. The international community has opposed the move fearing for the fate of the over 1.3 million Palestinians in the area of Rafah, many of whom fled there to escape bombing in northern Gaza.

Saudi report: ‘Still no breakthrough’ in talks for hostage deal, ceasefire

The Saudi television network Al-Arabiya, cited by the Ynet news site, reports that there is “still no breakthrough in the negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages.”

The report cites unnamed Egyptian officials who say there are “obstacles” preventing an agreement. “Hamas did not say how many hostages are still alive, and Israel will not agree to allow all the displaced Palestinians in the south of the Strip to return freely to the north,” an anonymous official tells the outlet.

The report offered further details on the January meeting in Oman between the Biden administration’s Middle East czar Brett McGurk and special envoy on Iran Abram Paley, and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani, which was first reported by The Financial Times.

(Bloomberg) -- Damage to four subsea cables off the west coast of Africa is disrupting internet services across the continent. 

The West Africa Cable System, MainOne, South Atlantic 3 and ACE sea cables — arteries for telecommunications data — were all affected on Thursday and early Friday, triggering outages and connectivity issues for a second day for mobile operators and internet service providers, according to data from internet-analysis firms including NetBlocks, Kentik and Cloudflare. The cause of the cable faults has not yet been determined.

El Salvador will transfer “a big chunk” of its bitcoin assets to an offline device that will be stored in a physical vault within the Central American country’s territory, President Nayib Bukele said on Thursday.

“We’ve decided to transfer a big chunk of our Bitcoin to a cold wallet, and store that cold wallet in a physical vault within our national territory,” Bukele, who last month was re-elected to a second term as president, said in a post on X. “It’s not much, but it’s honest work.” According to Bukele’s social media account on Thursday, El Salvador’s bitcoin portfolio is at close to $407 million.
