US fighter jet shoots down an anti-ship cruise missile targeting a destroyer in the Red Sea - as Houthi rebels pose with ROCKET LAUNCHERS and machine guns as they a for bombing Yemen targets

A US fighter jet has shot down a cruise missile fired towards an American destroyer by Houthi rebels - their first response to a series of drone strikes from Western forces.

The United States military and its allies began airstrikes on Friday on the rebels following weeks of assaults on shipping in the Red Sea.

The Houthis had targeted the corridor linking Asian and Mideast energy shipments to the Suez Canal over the Israel-Hamas war.

Many of the Houthis drones which are capable of reaching vessels far off the Yemeni coast have been estimated at not more than $20,000. Some of them are as low as a few thousand dollars to build. They can easily be intercepted by US and UK coalition warships, but at an immense cost for these Western militaries. 

Two Navy Seals Missing Off Somali Coast After Nighttime Boarding Mission

There has been more bad news to come out of the already chaotic waters of the Middle East region, as over the weekend it's been widely reported that two US Navy Seals have gone missing off the cost of Somalia in the Gulf of Aden.

The missing Seals "fell into the water during a nighttime boarding mission" on Thursday, according to US military officials, with the incident only being disclosed this weekend after the search and rescue mission has yielded no results. The fact that they went overboard in the dark would make it very hard for rescuers to immediately locate them.

IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said that the army is “not going to withdraw from Khan Yunis or anywhere else” in Gaza, adding that “military action takes time.”

The United States urged Israel to tone down its military campaign in Gaza as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged that the IDF would continue its war until Hamas was defeated. “We are not saying let your foot up off the gas completely and don’t keep going after Hamas,” US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday when pressed on tensions between the two allies about Gaza.

The IDF on Sunday published an extensive update on war statistics to date. These include some 9,000 Hamas terrorists killed; two of Hamas’s five brigade-level commanders eliminated; 19 battalion-level commanders killed of 24 battalions. Despite those successes, Hamas’s top leadership in Gaza remains at large.

Human rights organizations recently published reports detailing the numbers of killed civilians in Gaza. According to Oxfam International, the daily death rate in Gaza is higher than any other major 21st century conflict.

In its new report released Jan. 11, Oxfam calculated that the number of average deaths per day for Gaza “is significantly higher than any recent major armed conflict including Syria (96.5 deaths per day), Sudan (51.6), Iraq (50.8), Ukraine (43.9) Afghanistan (23.8) and Yemen (15.8).”

In undated, edited-together clips, the video released Sunday showed Noa Argamani, 26, Yossi Sharabi, 53, and Itay Svirsky, 38, identifying themselves and asking the Israeli government to bring them home.

TOKYO and SEOUL -- North Korea launched a suspected ballistic missile on Sunday afternoon, Japan and South Korea said. The launch appeared to have been a shorter-range ballistic missile than those recently tested based on its flight time, Japan's Defense Ministry said.

South Korean officials said the missile was launched from the Pyongyang area into the East Sea just before 3 p.m. local time. It traveled about 1,000 km, or about 621 miles, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

Iceland has been rocked by a fresh Volcanic eruption

A volcano erupted in southwest Iceland early Sunday, sending lava flowing toward a nearby town for the second time in a few weeks, authorities said.

The eruption began north of the town of Grindavík just before 8 a.m. UTC (2 a.m. ET), the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said. The town was evacuated on Saturday as fears of an imminent eruption rose following multiple earthquakes in the area. Barriers of earth and rock were built in recent weeks in a bid to prevent lava from reaching Grindavík, but authorities said the latest eruption has apparently breached those defenses.

Oklahoma City rocked by 4.4-magnitude earthquake in Edmond

Oklahomans woke up early Saturday morning to more shaking as another large earthquake hit the state. According to a U.S. Geological Survey report, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake was recorded at 5:36 a.m. about 4 miles east-northeast of Edmond.
