Another UK Ship On Fire Near Yemen As Sea Becomes Littered With Disabled Tankers

The last several days have witnessed well over half a dozen attacks or attempted attacks by Houthis on foreign vessels and tankers in the Red Sea. For example the US military confirmed Tuesday that two US-owned tankers were struck the day prior. Such attacks are now coming several times a day. On Thursday the Pentagon said its coalition ships in the Red Sea intercepted six more drones over waters off Yemen. This came after another UK-owned ship was struck, and is reportedly burning and immobile some 70 nautical miles southeast of Aden.

US Observes Significant Increase in Houthi Attacks on Ships in Past 48-72hrs

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The United States have observed an increase in the number of attacks conducted by Yemen’s Houthis in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden over the last three days, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said on Thursday. Singh made the remarks when asked about the number of US commercial and military vessels damaged or rendered inoperable by Houthi attacks, and whether the Yemeni movement had ramped up its attacks.

US defense chief: Israel needs a ‘credible plan’ to ensure civilian safety before entering Rafah

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant yesterday evening about Israel’s operation against Hamas in Khan Younis, the Pentagon says in a readout of the call.

Austin stressed the need to Gallant for a “credible plan to ensure the safety of and support for the more than one million people sheltering in Rafah before any military operations proceed there,” the Pentagon says. The two also discussed ongoing efforts to secure the release of the hostages still held captive by Hamas, as well as the need to improve access to humanitarian aid for Palestinian civilians, as looting and violence are hindering access to the convoys inside the Strip.

US to impose sanctions on over 500 targets in Russia action on Friday

The United States will impose sanctions on over 500 targets on Friday in action marking the second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Deputy US Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo told Reuters on Thursday. The action, taken in partnership with other countries, will be targeted at Russia's military industrial complex as well as companies in third countries that help facilitate Russia's access to goods it wants, Adeyemo said, as Washington seeks to hold Russia to account over the war and the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

President Biden has just upped the ante on Ukraine aid while continuing to press House Republicans to approve the gargantuan war spending bill and its $61 billion for Kiev. Even while it's clear Ukraine forces are being beaten back from the front lines, NBC reports this week that Biden is now closer to approving longer-range missile systems, which are capable of striking deeper into Crimea and Russian territory. 

"After months of requests from Ukrainian officials, the Biden administration is working toward providing Ukraine with powerful new long-range ballistic missiles, according to two U.S. officials," the report says.

The American Meteor Society started receiving reports shortly after 6:45 p.m. of a glowing object that quickly transversed the sky. The mystery of the inscription on the bronze sphinx statue discovered in the early 19th century was solved 200 years later. The bronze sphinx statue, dating to the third century, was discovered in Dacia, a Roman province corresponding to modern-day Romania. However, after being discovered in the 19th century, the statue was stolen from a European count sometime around 1848. While the sphinx was never found, a detailed drawing of it survived. Dacia is the ancient name for Romania and has seen the rule of various groups and empires throughout history.
