The three prerequisites were detailed in an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal, in which the premier reiterated his stance that the Palestinian Authority is unfit to govern the Gaza Strip after Hamas is vanquished, a position that has put him at odds with US President Joe Biden’s administration.

The reported shift just happens to dovetail with US demands that Israel ease up on its high-energy bombardments and surges of troops into urban areas, and just in time for an unofficial January deadline.

Iran’s president Ebrahim Raisi vowed that Israel “will certainly pay for this crime.”

The US military carried out retaliatory air strikes on Monday in Iraq after a one-way drone attack earlier in the day by Iran-aligned militants that left one US service member in critical condition and wounded two other US personnel, officials said.

The back-and-forth clash was the latest demonstration of how the Israel-Hamas war is rippling across the Middle East, creating turmoil that has turned US troops at bases in Iraq and Syria into targets.

Danish shipping major AP Moller-Maersk plans to restart shipments through the Red Sea after a pause earlier this month, following attacks on vessels by Houthi rebels, the company announced on Sunday. According to a statement, Maersk expects the route to be more secure now that the US and allies have deployed naval ships to the area to deter further attacks. The company said it would provide more details on the resumption of shipping in the area in the coming days, but warned that the decision to resume transportation may be reversed if the security conditions do not improve.

Earlier Shoigu said that the Ukrainian armed forces have lost more than 125,000 people and 16,000 units of weapons over the six-month counteroffensive. "The main efforts of the outgoing year were focused on achieving the goals of the special military operation. The main one was to disrupt the counteroffensive of the Ukrainian armed forces loudly proclaimed by Ukraine and its NATO allies. This task was successfully accomplished," Shoigu stressed.

Thousands of migrants arrived Sunday in the southern Mexican town Alvaro Obregon to spend the Christmas Eve in a public square without shelter before making their way north to cross the country and reach the border with the United States.

The group of mostly Central American and Caribbean migrants Sunday had walked 15 kilometers (more than 9 miles) from the southern border city Tapachula to get to Alvaro Obregon, with plans to set off again around 4 a.m. the next day.

2024’s Deficit Is Already on Track to Be the Worst Since Covid

According to the latest monthly statement from the Treasury Department, the total budget deficit for the 2024 fiscal year (which began October 1) has already risen above $380 billion. The new total, which includes the months of October and November, puts the US on track for a total annual deficit of more than $2 trillion by the end of the fiscal year. That would be an increase of more than 25 percent over 2023 fiscal year, which was itself a 23 percent increase over 2022.

A new change to the Canadian Labour Code that went into effect earlier this month stipulates that all federally regulated employers are now required to provide free menstrual products in all employee bathrooms. The change was announced in May of 2023 by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government and kicked in on December 15.

Regulations posted to Canada's Employment and Social Development website specify that 'menstrual products must be in all toilet rooms, regardless of their marked genders.'

Pro-life and family campaigners in Italy have hit out at a “dangerous and blasphemous” church nativity scene featuring two mothers of the baby Jesus instead of Mary and Joseph figurines. An online petitioncalling on the bishop in the province of Avellino to intervene has attracted more than 21,000 signatures.

It claimed the scene contradicted the Catholic Church’s teachings about the family and legitimized same-sex parenting and surrogacy. But the priest at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, in the Avellino hamlet of Capocastello di Mercogliano, east of Naples, has defended its depiction of Jesus’s birth.
