Ukraine ready to discuss neutrality, Zelensky says
The Ukrainian president says Kiev has been left to fend for itself as NATO is “afraid” to give it any guarantees
Accusing the West of leaving Ukraine to face Moscow alone, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday he was not afraid to negotiate an end to the Russian “invasion,” but would need security guarantees to do so.
Speaking in the early hours of the morning from Kiev, Zelensky said he had reached out to “partners” in the West to tell them that Ukraine’s fate was at stake.
“I asked them – are you with us?” Zelensky said. “They answered that they are with us, but they don’t want to take us into the alliance. I’ve asked 27 leaders of Europe, if Ukraine will be in NATO, I’ve asked them directly – all are afraid and did not respond.”
Russian military confirms seizure of Chernobyl nuclear power plant
Moscow confirmed on Friday that its paratroopers seized the area surrounding the closed Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine’s northern Kiev Region, which was the site of a major disaster in 1986.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its troops struck a deal with Ukrainian soldiers to jointly maintain the safety of the reactors and the so-called New Safe Confinement – a giant shield-like structure built around the damaged reactor unit. The ministry added that the radiation level had not changed, and the plant’s staff were continuing to monitor the situation as usual.

Kiev has not confirmed the claim about an agreement having been reached with the Russians regarding the plant. On Thursday,
Russia ready to negotiate with Ukraine – Kremlin
Moscow is willing to negotiate terms of surrender with Kiev regarding the ongoing Russian military offensive currently taking place in Ukraine, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.
According to Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his preparedness to engage in discussions with his Ukrainian counterpart, with a focus on obtaining a guarantee of neutral status and the promise of no weapons on its territory.
These are terms that, according to Peskov, would enable the achievement of the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, and eliminate what Russia currently views as a threat to the security of its state and people.

White House Says Russian Forces 20 Miles Outside Ukraine's Capital
Update(10:50pmET): Possible cruise or ballistic missiles have reportedly hit targets in or around the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. It's unclear the degree to which the strikes are sustained at this point.
Update(6:42pmET): Shortly before 1am Kiev time Ukraine's President Zelensky announced: "The enemy’s sabotage forces have entered the capital. Me and my family are remaining."
"We need to talk about a ceasefire with Russia," he added in the video message. Then what followed suggests the brutal reality is finally sinking in that despite years of 'promises' from Washington and the West of a "path to NATO membership" - none of his backers or Ukraine's allies are coming to help:

Trudeau announces more sanctions against Russia
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday that Canada would bring in several "severe" sanctions against Russia after its attack on Ukraine.
Trudeau announced that Canada and other G7 countries will bring forward even more sanctions as they move to harm Russia's economy. This is in line with President Joe Biden's announcement as well.

The goal will be to convince the public that our involvement in Ukraine is a moral and geopolitical necessity. There will be attempts to gain American favor and a call for US boots on the ground. Russian CyberAttack Could Trigger Article 5 NATO Response, Says US Senator
The chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday elevated questions about whether a Russian cyberattack could trigger an Article 5 “collective defense” response from NATO and thus set off a broader war.
Sen. Mark Warner’s (D-Va.) comments to multiple news outlets come just after Russia launcheda military attack on Ukraine and continued cyber attacks targeting Ukrainian government institutions.
Speaking on “CBS Mornings,” Warner referenced Russia’s 2017 “NotPetya” crippling cyberattack involving a single piece of malware and said a broader computer-based offensive by Moscow was certainly possible..
“If the Russians decide they’re going to turn off the power, turn off all the electricity all across Ukraine,” said Warner, that same attack could “very likely… turn off the power in eastern Poland, in eastern Romania.” That in turn could affect U.S. troops based in eastern Europe, for example, “if suddenly hospitals are shut down.”
Missing CDC employee's body found in river weeks after disappearance, police say
The body of a missing employee at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was found this week in a river nearly two months after his "unusual" disappearance prompted a nationwide search, police announced Thursday.
Timothy Cunningham, an epidemiologist at the CDC, was found in Chattahoochee River in northwest Atlanta late Tuesday. Fishermen in the area spotted the body along the bank of the river face up. The decomposed body was stuck in mud in an area that was not easily accessible, leading officials to believe it was “in that position for a while.”

COVID-19 Cases, Hospitalizations Jump Among Vaccinated: CDC Data
COVID-19 case and hospitalization rates increased among people who got a COVID-19 vaccine following the emergence of the Omicron virus variant, according to newly published data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
According to the data, which is submitted to the CDC by health departments across the country, the COVID-19 case rate in fully vaccinated people rose by more than 1,000 percent between Dec. 11, 2021, and Jan. 8, 2022.
Fully vaccinated refers to people who received two doses of the Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines, or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
The CDC doesn’t count a person as fully vaccinated until 14 days have elapsed from his or her final shot.

FDNY Union Leader Requests Investigation Into Possible Link Between Recent Department Deaths And COVID Vaccines
The head of New York’s Uniformed Fire Officers Association (UFOA) is seeking an investigation into three recent department deaths to determine if the COVID vaccine played a role in these firefighters’ passing. Each of the deaths occurred in the months following the city’s COVID-19 jab mandate for municipal workers.
The request from James McCarthy comes after the line-of-duty deaths of Firefighter Vincent Malveaux, 31, who died December 2nd at the FDNY Training Academy after suffering a medical episode believed to be a seizure. Lt. Joseph Maiello, 53, was found dead in a Staten Island firehouse after a Christmas shift, and Firefighter Jesse Gerhard, 33, died on February 16th at his firehouse after a medical episode.
McCarthy said about the tragic deaths:
“That’s a significant amount of people in a very short time. The vaccine is a concern with our members because it is something new that is being put into our bodies. It could be a factor.”
ISRAEL HITS TARGETS NEAR QUNEITRA, SYRIAN MEDIA REPORTS
Israeli missiles struck targets near Quneitra in southwestern Syria early on Wednesday, according to official Syrian media.
The missiles were launched from the Golan Heights just after midnight, and caused material damage but no casualties, reported the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), citing a Syrian military source.
Israel did not comment on the report.
According to Lebanese media reports, the alleged Israeli attack targeted a Syrian military position near the villages of Madinat al-Baath and Rwihinah used by Iran-backed militias.

Responding to Israel’s cautious condemnations of its aggression in Ukraine, Russia just assailed Israel in the United Nations over its annexation of the Golan Heights. According to the Times of Israel, Russia is a close ally of Syria, from which Israel captured the territory in the 1967 Six-Day War.
“We’re concerned over Tel Aviv’s announced plans for expanding settlement activity in the occupied #GolanHeights, which contradicts the provisions of the 1949 Geneva Convention,” the Russian mission to the UN tweeted. “Russia doesn’t recognize Israel’s sovereignty over Golan Heights that are part of Syria.”
