Airlines warn of chaos if 5G mobile service is deployed this week
Two days before Verizon and AT&T plan to deploy more segments of their new 5G mobile internet technology, leaders of the nation’s largest air carriers warned again on Monday that thousands of flights could be grounded by interference from the technology and that “the nation’s commerce will grind to a halt.”
In unusually sharp terms, the airline industry implied in a letter to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and other top federal officials that Verizon’s and AT&T’s plans could add to the disruptions in the global shipping network that have fueled inflation.

The German doctor added that the Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines have a horrible accumulation of cases in certain batches.

Chinese cities are piling into the metaverse
No one knows what the metaverse is yet, but that hasn’t stopped global tech giants such as Facebook, which rebranded as Meta, Google, and Tencent from being caught up in the metaverse craze.
According to Quartz, Not to be left out, several Chinese cities are peppering their official economic plans with mentions of the concept. There is no clear definition of what the metaverse actually is, but generally, the idea is that it involves a three-dimensional experience of the internet that combines the real and the virtual worlds.
In December, Shanghai officials said at a key economic meeting that the city will guide corporations (link in Chinese) in studying the “important platform that contains the intersection between the virtual world and the real world,” seen widely as a reference to the metaverse.

UK’s Johnson scraps ‘Plan B’ Covid measures amid Omicron spread
Speaking on Wednesday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the end of Covid-19 measures as the latest data suggested the wave of infections driven by the Omicron variant was past its peak. The scrapping of the ‘Plan B’ restrictions means that Covid-19 passes will no longer be required in England and that people will not be asked to work from home whenever possible.

While face masks will no longer be needed in classrooms and guidance on wearing covering in tight communal spaces will be removed, Johnson said the government will still “suggest” their use to prevent contagion. “We will trust the judgement of the British people and no longer criminalize anyone who chooses not to wear them (masks),” he added.
The prime minister also said that organizations can voluntarily choose to use the health pass and said that the government will remove restrictions preventing people from visiting care homes.
5G rollout in US downscaled over flight safety concerns

Wednesday’s rollout of a next-generation high-speed internet service in the US has been forced to downscale. Telecoms firm AT&T said it was “temporarily” postponing the launch of 5G at a “limited number of towers around certain airport runways.” Verizon announced it has also decided to limit its 5G network around airports.
Airlines have been pushing to delay the launch of the service in the US over fears that the 5G signals could hamper the work of airplane navigation systems, especially those used in bad weather. Major aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing also voiced their concerns last month and called on the US government to delay the rollout.

Moreover, local officials were quick to react to the governor’s non-emergency by imposing a variety of mandates of their own. More than 80 percent of the state’s population still lives in counties with mask mandates.
For even this extremely mild and timid move in the direction of personal freedom, Polis was raked over the coals by the state’s left-of-center activists. Within days, The Sentinel, a newspaper out of Aurora, Colorado issued an unsigned editorial declaring “No, Gov. Polis, the pandemic emergency is not over.” The column excoriated the governor for daring to end mask mandates and for categorically refusing the idea of future lockdowns.
