Biden declares US energy emergency

The nation’s ability to provide sufficient electricity is under threat, partly because of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the US president says

US President Joe Biden has blamed Russia for a looming crisis in the US, saying his country might not be able to generate enough electricity to meet consumer demand, partly due to the conflict in Ukraine. 

Biden declared an energy emergency on Monday, saying national security and quality of life are jeopardized by potential shortfalls in power supplies. He invoked the Defense Production Act – originally part of an industrial mobilization effort in response to the Korean War – to spur domestic production of solar panels and other forms of “clean” energy to boost power supplies.

A senior US official has vowed a “forceful response” should North Korea conduct a nuclear test, following Pyongyang's latest ballistic missile launch over the weekend, which was matched by a similar show of force from Washington and Seoul.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with her South Korean counterpart, Deputy US Secretary of State Wendy Sherman argued that any nuclear test would violate United Nations Security Council resolutions and warned of a massive international reaction.

“There would be a swift and forceful response to such a test,” she said, adding “The entire world will respond in a strong and clear manner. We are prepared.”

NATO Kicks Off Baltic War Games With Finland, Sweden As Russia Tensions Boil

he North Atlantic Treaty Organization announced it will launch military drills with 7,000 troops in the Baltics. The provocative war games will include Sweden and Finland. Stockholm is hosting the exercises after applying for NATO membership last month.

The war games, dubbed Baltic Operations (BALTOPS 22), are based in Stockholm. BALTOPS 22 will primarily consist of naval operations and run from June 5-17. The drills will involve 45 ships and 75 aircraft. Sixteen nations will participate, including Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The most enduring US ally in the Syrian War, the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are very publicly interested in resisting the latest round of planned Turkish invasions of northern Syria, saying they are open to coordination with the Syrian government’s troops to do so.

Turkey has repeatedly invaded northern Syria and northern Iraq to have a run at Kurdish factions, declaring them "terrorists" in both. The operations in Syria aim at the SDF’s parent organization, the YPG.

A group estimated by media outlets at up to 15,000, possibly the largest on record, has begun its journey from Mexico

A caravan of as many as 15,000 migrants, many from Venezuela and Cuba, has begun its march from southern Mexico to the US border, fleeing poverty and violence, as President Joe Biden hosts leaders from across the continent at this week’s Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles.

The migrants set off on Monday from Tapachula, a city in the southeast corner of Mexico’s Chiapas state, a few miles from the Guatemalan border, according to media reports. They’ll have to travel more than 3,000 miles to reach the US.

The CDC warns that the disease has been most prevalent among 'men who have sex with men'

The CDC raised its alert level for monkeypox to level 2 on Monday, recommending that travelers wear masks, among other health measures.

While not on the level of COVID-19, monkeypox has spread across the globe out of Africa since March. Monkeypox symptoms begin as relatively flu-like but soon expand to the swelling of lymph nodes and a rash across the body and face. Ultimately, painful lesions form on rash areas, leaving severe scarring.

"Cases of monkeypox have been reported in Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia," the CDC wrote in its alert.
