Xi Jinping holds phone talks with Zelensky

The call will provide a “powerful” boost to bilateral ties, the Ukrainian leader said

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Ukrainian counterpart, Vladimir Zelensky, have spoken over the phone, in what is presumed to be their first conversation since Moscow launched its military operation in the neighboring state more than a year ago.

Zelensky tweeted that the dialogue was “long and meaningful.” He said the call, along with the appointment of an ambassador to China, will “give a powerful impetus to the development of our bilateral relations.”

Russia has condemned the UK’s decision to send depleted uranium shells to Ukraine, saying the move marks an “all-out escalation” after the British Defence Ministry confirmed the radioactive weapons were already in Kiev’s hands.

Moscow’s UK embassy issued a statement on Tuesday after senior official James Heappey acknowledged that the British DU munitions had arrived on the battlefield, to be fired from Challenger 2 tanks also supplied to Ukraine. 

British depleted uranium already in Ukraine

The UK government has already started shipments of depleted uranium ammunition to Ukraine, Armed Forces Minister James Heappey said, noting that the British military would not attempt to track where the weapons are used.

In response to questions from Scottish MP Kenny MacAskill, Heappey confirmed on Tuesday that DU munitions for the UK-made Challenger 2 tank had already arrived in Ukraine, though declined to comment on Kiev’s “usage rates for the rounds provided.”

Ukraine Postponed Attacks Inside Russia Due To US Pressure: Leaked Intel

The Washington Post reported Monday that Ukraine’s military intelligence directorate, known as HUR, was planning major strikes inside Russia in February that were postponed due to US pressure.

The report cited documents allegedly leaked by Airman Jack Teixeira. According to a report from the National Security Agency, HUR chief Maj. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov instructed one officer "to get ready for mass strikes on 24 February … with everything the HUR had." The date marked one year since Russia launched its invasion.

Russia’s most advanced T-14 Armata main battle tanks have been deployed to fight Ukrainian troops, RIA Novosti news agency reported on Tuesday, citing a source. The news comes as Kiev is planning a decisive push against Moscow’s forces.

“The Russian forces have begun to use the newest Armata tanks to fire at Ukrainian positions,” the source said, adding that the tanks “haven’t participated in direct assault actions yet.”

Israel offers to mediate ceasefire summit in Sudan

Israel has offered to host ceasefire talks between warring factions in Sudan as the death toll reached several hundreds on Monday.

Russia and Iran have deepened their ties amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Iran shipped over 300,000 artillery shells and a million rounds of ammunition to Russia across the Caspian Sea in the past six months, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

Iran has mostly used cargo flights to ship weapons to Russia, which are nearly impossible for Western countries to stop, and blocking the shipment of weapons in the Caspian Sea would require the agreement of former Soviet republics in the area.

Rumors are making rounds that Saudi Arabia is selling oil for yuan, which it converts into gold on the Shanghai International Gold Exchange (SGEI). Such a development would make sense as large parts of the world want to de-dollarize, but the renminbi is not suitable to be used as a reserve currency. China has a closed capital account and a weak rule of law. Not using the dollar could be done by using the renminbi as a trade currency and converting yuan revenue into gold on the SGEI. If the rumor is true, Saudi Arabia is buying 1 Kg bars as there is virtually no trading in 12.5 Kg bars on the SGEI. The benefit of 1 Kg bars is that they are more fitting for fully allocated trading.

Major “End Time Prophecy Players” set to hold more meetings in Russia

Turkey’s defence minister said he planned to meet his Syrian, Russian, and Iranian counterparts in Moscow on Tuesday, the state-owned Anadolu news agency said, amid efforts to rebuild Ankara-Damascus ties after years of animosity during the Syrian war. According to Reuters, Anadolu cited Defence Minister Hulusi Akar as saying the countries’ intelligence chiefs will also attend the meeting in Moscow.

This is a format that dates from last year as Russia seeks to normalize ties between Turkey and Syria. Turkey has been participating in the talks in the past but they have not advanced as far as Moscow would like. Turkey faces elections in May and had a massive earthquake in February that has reduced Ankara’s focus on these talks.

The US Secretary of the Treasury has indicated the US economy is at risk of mass unemployment, payment failures, broad economic weakness and interest rates rising “into perpetuity” if the government defaults on its debt later this year.

Speaking at a conference in Washington, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned Tuesday that the consequences would be devastating and broad if the government fails to pay its debts in the next few months.

Zimbabwe To Introduce Gold-Backed Digital Currency

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe is set to introduce a gold-backed digital currency to serve as legal tender in the country. The move is a government initiative to stabilize the local currency from continued depreciation against the U.S. dollar.

According to a report from local media outlet The Sunday Mail, the move will allow small amounts of Zimbabwean dollars to be exchanged for the digital gold token, enabling more Zimbabweans to hedge against currency volatility. Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor John Mangudya said the plan intends to “leave no one and no place behind.”

Mother Of 7 Denied Kidney Transplant For Refusing COVID Shot In Georgia

On dialysis and potentially facing death, a 41-year-old homeschooling mother of seven young children has been rejected as a candidate for a life-saving kidney transplant by Emory Healthcare Inc. of Atlanta.

The reason? The woman, who has already had COVID-19, refused to receive the COVID-19 vaccine on religious and medical grounds.

To protect her privacy, the patient will be referred to in this article as Jane Doe.

UK’s emergency alert system failed; we should make sure alerts are turned off for future trials

The UK government’s emergency alert was intended to reach people’s phones at 3 pm on Sunday. However, some said they received it a minute earlier, others half an hour late, and many said they didn’t get sent it at all. The national emergency alert system failed to sound on up to 10 million phones. 

It was probably better to not receive it at all when you consider that some people said they were sent the emergency alert during the early hours of Monday morning. Others also reported that they received the alert on Monday morning for the second time.
