Ukraine bombs civilian targets in Russia – regional governor

Ukraine has again shelled Russia’s Belgorod Region, the local governor announced on Friday. The attack was deliberately aimed at civilian infrastructure, the official added.
Vyacheslav Gladkov wrote on his Telegram channel: “thank God, there are no victims or wounded,” explaining that residents of the targeted area had been evacuated the day before. Gladkov said local authorities continue to go from house to house in the village, trying to convince people to leave for their own safety.

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has had rare direct contact with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, the Russian military reported on Friday.
According to the short readout, the two top officials “discussed issues of international security, including the situation in Ukraine” over the phone.
The last phone call between Shoigu and Austin was reported in May, with both sides giving away few details about it. It was the first direct conversation between the officials since Russia sent troops into Ukraine in late February.

A high-level Navy official said Wednesday that the US should prepare for the possibility of China invading Taiwan as soon as this year. "So when we talk about the 2027 window, in my mind, that has to be a 2022 window or potentially a 2023 window. I can’t rule it out," said Adm. Michael Gilday, the chief of naval operations.
The "2027 window" refers to a claim from retired Adm. Phil Davidson, the former head of US Indo-Pacific Command, who said last year he believes China could invade within six years. Gilday said he was prioritizing a "fight tonight" posture for the US Navy with respect to China and Russia.
China luring ex-RAF pilots to help train the PLA Air Force

“We are taking decisive steps to stop Chinese recruitment schemes attempting to headhunt active-duty and former RAF pilots to train People’s Liberation Army (PLA) personnel in the People’s Republic of China,” a MOD spokesperson told CNBC in a statement on Oct. 18.
According to a report by BBC News, around 30 former military pilots are thought to have gone to train members of China’s PLA Air Force.

The 79-page DoD report on the Army's testing of Microsoft HoloLens mixed reality headsets has yet to be officially released to the public but a summary via Nickolas Guertin, director of the Defense Department's Operation Test and Evaluation, concluded that 80% of soldiers who used the goggles experienced "mission-affecting physical impairments," such as headaches, eyestrain, and nausea.
One of the testers told Insider, "the devices would have gotten us killed" on the modern battlefield.

Australia’s Commonwealth Bank (CBA) has partnered with Cogo, a “carbon management solutions” company, to launch the new feature, which is part of CBA’s online banking platform.
The bank gives the customer the option to “pay a fee” to offset their carbon footprint, with the average listed as 1,280 kilograms, a long way from the ‘sustainable’ figure of 200 kilograms.

Redefine Meat markets its product under the brand name “New Meat,” using 3D printers to manufacture pieces of meat that mimic steaks, tenderloins and other choice cuts, it said in a release on 13 October.
