US Congress would authorize a direct military confrontation with China if Beijing launched an attack against Taiwan, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul told Fox News on Friday evening. The Texas Republican representative was talking from Taipei during a three-day bipartisan delegation visit to the self-governing island.
China May Have Fired ‘the Opening Salvo’ in a Military Confrontation Over Taiwan
The Chinese government has announced that it will begin to stop and inspect any ship that is seen sailing through the Taiwan Strait, according to alarming new reports.
Taiwan has stated that it will not cooperate with any kind of “search and seizure” by the People’s Liberation Army Navy.
“China’s Fujian maritime safety administration launched a three-day special joint patrol and inspection operation in the central and northern parts of the Taiwan Strait that includes moves to board ships, it said on its WeChat account,” Reuters reported.
US deploys nuclear sub to Middle East
The move comes amid protracted tensions between Washington and Tehran
The US Navy has broken with its regular protocol in announcing the deployment to the Middle East of a nuclear submarine capable of launching 154 Tomahawk missiles. The show-of-force move comes amid ongoing tensions with Iran.
“[The submarine] is capable of carrying up to 154 Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles and is deployed to US 5th Fleet to help ensure regional maritime security and stability,” said Cmdr. Timothy Hawkins, a spokesman for the 5th Fleet based in Bahrain, on Saturday.

Russian Air Defense Shoots Down Ukrainian Missile Over Crimea
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - A missile launched from Ukraine has been shot down by Russian air defense systems over the city of Feodosia on the Crimean peninsula, Head of the Republic of Crimea Sergey Aksyonov said on Saturday.
Earlier in the day, Aksyonov's adviser, Oleg Kryuchkov, said that air defense systems had engaged in the Feodosia region.
"A missile fired from the direction of Ukraine has been shot down over Feodosia," Aksyonov said on Telegram.

In a Telegram post, Kadyrov said he was surprised by “empty speculation” and concern swirling around Kiev’s supposed plans to launch an offensive, which is widely expected to kick off within several weeks.
IDF strikes Syria after six rockets fired toward Golan Heights
The head of the Golan Regional Council ordered shelters opened in towns in the southern Golan Heights.
The IDF conducted airstrikes in the Damascus area and fired artillery shells and conducted UAV strikes against rocket launchers in Syria early Sunday morning, after six rockets were fired in two waves toward the Golan Heights overnight.
The sites targeted by Israeli airstrikes in Syria included a military compound belonging to the Syrian Army's 4th Division, radar sites and artillery sites used by the Syrian Army.

"I am working as swiftly as Texas law allows regarding the pardon of Sgt. Perry," Abbott tweeted, along with a longer explanation that "Unlike the President or some other states, the Texas Constitution limits the Governor's pardon authority to only act on a recommendation by the Board of Pardons and Paroles.
"Texas law DOES allow the Governor to request the Board of Pardons and Paroles to determine if a person should be granted a pardon. I have made that request and instructed the Board to expedite its review."

Switzerland Stops Recommending COVID-19 Vaccination
Swiss authorities have stopped recommending COVID-19 vaccination, including for people who are designated at high risk from COVID-19.
Switzerland’s Federal Office of Public Health now says that “no COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for spring/summer 2023.”
People designated high risk are also not recommended to get a COVID-19 vaccine, authorities said. They attributed the change to the number of citizens who have received a vaccine, recovered from COVID-19, or both received a vaccine and enjoy natural immunity from post-recovery protection

To manufacture its meat, Upside Foods harvests cells from live animals, chicken tissue, and uses the cells to grow meat in stainless-steel tanks known as bioreactors.

An unidentified flying object was located near a nuclear power plant close to Russia’s second city, St. Petersburg, according to new reports.
An alert signal was sounded around the Leningrad nuclear power plant in the Russian town of Sosnovy Bor, local and state media reported on Wednesday. The object was moving at around 200 kilometers per hour (124 miles per hour) at an altitude of approximately 10,000 meters (33,000 feet), Russian sources reported.
