Russian forces withdraw from key Donbass town
Troops left Krasny Liman due to the threat of encirclement, Moscow has confirmed
Russian troops and Donbass forces have withdrawn from their defensive positions in the town of Krasny Liman, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed in a statement on Saturday.
The move came as Ukrainian forces mounted a large-scale offensive targeting the area. Earlier, the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Denis Pushilin, called the situation in the settlement “alarming,” saying it had been “half-encircled” by Ukrainian troops.

The sabotage of Russia’s Nord Stream gas pipelines benefits the US, not Russia or the EU, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said on Friday.
“The main question is whether what happened to Nord Stream is beneficial to the US? Absolutely. US suppliers of liquefied natural gas should now celebrate a several-fold increase in LNG supplies to the European continent. And from the political point of view – the last thread ensuring EU independence in the terms of energy has been severed,” Nebenzia said at the UN Security Council.

Washington has for years been trying to convince EU leaders to swap Russian gas for its LNG.

Russia will not use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, despite threats to do so if attacked, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria in an interview set to air Sunday.
While claiming that “there are no checks on [Russian President Vladimir] Putin,” Austin dismissed the Russian president’s recent statements – including a warning that he was not “bluffing” about his willingness to use nukes “to defend Russia and our people” – as wholly unsuitable for a global superpower.

China Opens Police Stations in 30 Countries to Monitor and Control Chinese Citizens
On 12 September, Safeguard Defenders published a report titled ‘110 Overseas: Chinese Transnational Policing Gone Wild’. The report states that 30 Chinese surveillance stations were established in 25 cities across 21 countries at the start of 2022. Safeguard Defenders have, so far, identified a further 24. Europe is home to most of these Chinese overseas police service stations.
Safeguard Defenders is a human rights non-profit organisation based in Spain which was founded in late 2016. The latest Safeguard Defenders’ report is the result of an investigation into the Chinese police’s expanding global policing “toolkit” following the release of new data from the Chinese government.

Scientists have discovered a reservoir of water three times the volume of all the oceans beneath the Earth’s surface, according to an international study.
The water has been found between the transition zone of the Earth’s upper and lower mantle. The research team analyzed a rate diamond formed 660 meters below the Earth’s surface using techniques including Raman spectroscopy and FTIR spectrometry, ANI reported.

An official in Sanibel, Florida, shared an update on how Hurricane Ian has devastated his small island community. “The damage is catastrophic and it is biblical,” Dana Souza, Sanibel’s city manager, told Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie on TODAY Friday.
“I’ve never seen anything like this … residents who have lived on Sanibel for many, many years, just can’t even understand the damage that we’ve experienced.” Sanibel, home to about 6,300 people, is located on Sanibel Island off the west coast of Florida, just south of Fort Myers. The causeway connecting the island to the mainland was severely damaged by the storm, meaning the island is now only reachable by boat.
