US announces military activity near Taiwan
Chinese drills will not deter the US Navy from operating in the area, the White House said
US Navy ships and planes will transit the Taiwan Strait in the next two weeks, the White House announced on Thursday. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby condemned Chinese military drills in the area and said the Pentagon had ordered the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and her escorts to remain near Taiwan to “monitor the situation.”

China fired multiple missiles toward waters near northeastern and southwestern Taiwan on Thursday, the island’s Defense Ministry said, as Beijing makes good on its promise that Taipei will pay a price for hosting US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The Chinese military’s Eastern Theater Command said in a statement that multiple missiles had been fired into the sea off the eastern part of Taiwan. It said all the missiles hit their target accurately. “The entire live-fire training mission has been successfully completed and the relevant air and sea area control are now lifted,” China’s statement said.

FBI Director Christopher Wray has warned that terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda continue to seek ways to launch large-scale attacks in the US and other Western countries, despite Washington’s efforts to “degrade” the organization’s senior leadership.
Speaking to lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Thursday, Wray said “preventing terrorist attacks” remains “the FBI’s top priority,” and went on to highlight the alleged threat posed by various actors, including the infamous terror cell behind the September 11 attacks.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has accused Amnesty International of siding with “terrorists” after the organization condemned the Ukrainian military for placing weapons in civilian areas in violation of humanitarian law.
“Today we saw a report by Amnesty International, which unfortunately tries to amnesty the terrorist state and shift responsibility from the aggressor to the victim,” Zelensky said in a video address on Thursday evening.

The US and South Korea are planning new war games where they will simulate taking out North Korea’s military leadership, including the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, The Daily Beast reported on Wednesday.
The drills will simulate targeting Pyongyang’s missile and nuclear sites plus bases needed to supply them. Sources familiar told The Daily Beast that the war games will end with a "decapitation" exercise where they attack North Korea’s command structure and take out Kim.

The death toll in Balochistan—the worst affected province, has already reached 150, with 15 fatalities confirmed in the previous 24 hours, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).1
Several regions of Balochistan continued to be pummeled by the severe rain, which destroyed homes, roads, and bridges, wiped off crops, and swept away cattle. Recent fatalities were recorded in the Balochistan regions of Zhob, Qilla Saifullah, Kohlu, Naushki, and Lasbela, which experienced flash floods.

4 people have been killed and more than 100 structures destroyed as the McKinney Fire in Siskiyou County’s Klamath National Forest, northern California, rapidly spread into the state’s largest fire of the season.
The fire started on July 29 and by August 4 it spread to 23 742 ha (58 668 acres) of land. More than 2 200 personnel is battling the blaze which is only 10% contained as of today.1
The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office said more than 100 homes, sheds and other buildings have been destroyed, including the homes of several deputies who are continuing to work despite personally being under evacuation orders.
Four people in critical condition after lightning strike near White House
Washington (CNN)Four people are in critical condition following a lightning strike across the street from the White House.
The lightning strike hit Lafayette Park which sits directly across the street from the White House, Vito Maggiolo, a spokesperson for DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, said in a news conference Thursday evening.
"All four were suffering critical, life-threatening injuries," when help arrived, said Maggiolo, who was unable to provide additional details about the incident or the victims' conditions.
