US allies slam plan to send cluster bombs to Kiev

Both Ottawa and London have said they are against using the weapons on the battlefield

Canada and the UK have become the latest Western nations to voice concern over US President Joe Biden’s decision to provide cluster munitions to Ukraine. Both countries have reaffirmed their commitment to a UN agreement banning the armaments and spoken against employing them in the current conflict with Russia.

“We do not support the use of cluster munitions,” the Canadian government told the national broadcaster CTV on Saturday. Ottawa is “committed to putting an end to the effects cluster munitions have on civilians – particularly children,” the statement read.

Supplying cluster bombs to Ukraine is wrong – NATO member

Spain categorically opposes the delivery of the weapons, Defense Minister Margarita Robles has said

Cluster munitions should not be used by Ukraine “under any circumstances,” Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles said on Saturday. Her comment came a day after the US announced that it would send the controversial ordnance to Ukraine, amid a shortage in conventional shells.

“Spain, based on the firm commitment it has with Ukraine, also has a firm commitment that certain weapons and bombs cannot be delivered under any circumstances,” Robles told reporters after a rally in Madrid. Spain says "no to cluster bombs and yes to the legitimate defense of Ukraine, which we understand should not be carried out with cluster bombs,” Robles added, according to Reuters.

“The Ukrainian government has offered us assurances in writing on the responsible use of DPICMs, including that they will not use the rounds in civilian populated urban environments, and that they will record where they use these rounds, which will simplify later demining efforts,” under secretary of defense Colin Kahl said in a briefing Friday announcing the US decision to send cluster munitions to Kiev.

“Berlin is stand-offish at the prospect of offering immediate membership… It wants a process and time to develop guarantees to essentially block membership,” an unnamed source within the military bloc told the British outlet.

Latvia has sworn in President Edgars Rinkevics who is EU's first openly gay head of state. The 49-year-old was appointed as Latvia's Foreign Minister in 2014. In the same year, Rinkevics tweeted "I proudly announce I am gay". He has been a vocal supporter of the LGBTQ+ community ever since. Interestingly, gay marriages are illegal in Latvia. However, the country's constitutional court recognised same sex relationships last year.
