Former Russian president fires warning to US
Dmitry Medvedev argued that his country is fighting for its existence and has the right to use nuclear weapons to defend itself
The US is attempting to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia in the conflict in Ukraine, meaning Moscow has the right to defend itself by any means necessary, including nuclear weapons, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has stated. He warned that US elites should not consider themselves untouchable.
Medvedev, who serves as deputy chair of the Russian Security Council, was commenting on Wednesday after speeches made the previous day by the leaders of Russia and the US.

Russian lawmakers approved a bill on Wednesday submitted by President Vladimir Putin, in which Moscow will temporarily suspend its participation in the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty (New START) – the last existing nuclear accord between Russia and the US.
In an explanatory note attached to the bill, the lawmakers state that the agreement, which was meant to cut in half the number of nuclear weapons deployed around the world, was supposed to allow both parties to carry out inspections in order to ensure compliance with the treaty. The US, however, “deliberately fails to fulfill its obligations under the treaty in this area of activity,” they wrote.
