Referendums on officially becoming Russian territories have begun in the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk and the Russian-controlled parts of southern Ukraine.Â
The votes will take place from today until Tuesday next week. Preliminary results are expected to be released by Wednesday.
Russia's Medvedev: new regions can be defended with strategic nuclear weapons
Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday that any weapons in Moscow's arsenal, including strategic nuclear weapons, could be used to defend territories incorporated in Russia from Ukraine.
Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, said that referenda being organized by Russian-installed and separatist authorities in large swathes of Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory will take place, and that "there is no going back."

Russiaâs partial mobilization of military reservists, announced by President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, will not apply to some skilled workers. Waivers will be granted to people with a post-secondary degree, who work in information technology, telecommunications, mass media, and finance, the Defense Ministry announced on Friday.
Organizations whose workers qualify will need to send lists of their employees to the Russian General Staff to ensure that they are not called up for service.
EU Divided On Giving Asylum To Russians Fleeing Mobilization
An EU spokeswoman for the European Commission said Thursday that the bloc should give asylum to Russians fleeing the mobilization order, but the EUâs members are not on the same page.
Anita Hipper, an EU spokeswoman for migration, said that the situation is "unprecedented" and said work was ongoing between EU members to find a common approach.
