Barclays bank has revealed 28 new branch closures in July, on top of the 13 it confirmed in March, 27 in May, and 29 in June - all of which are set to shut this year. Since the start of 2022, the bank has already closed dozens of its branches. Based on its current schedule, by the end of the year it will have closed 160 sites. Barclays told us more of its customers were doing their banking via digital channels, and less than 10% of its transactions were done in person. GeoNet is reporting an increase in earthquake activity under Lake Taupō since May 2022. Lake Taupō is a large caldera volcano, a special type of volcano that has rare but unusually large eruptions.
While Lake Taupō sits above the Taupō volcano, the recent earthquakes are not considered to be an indicator that an eruption is on the way, GeoNet scientists said.
This activity is similar to recent periods of elevated earthquakes activity and ground deformation measured in 2008-2009 and 2019.
The Volcanic Alert Level for Taupō Volcanic Centre remains at Level 0.
In 2022, five clusters have been active, beneath the central part of Lake Taupō, north of the lake at Wairakei, Rotokawa, and Ngatamariki, and at Tūrangi.1

This is the second M6+ earthquake to hit Antofagasta since M6.2 at 18:58 UTC on July 27.
The epicenter was located 30.5 km (18.9 miles) WNW of Tocopilla (population 24 460) and 186.1 km (115.6 miles) N of Antofagasta (population 309 832), Chile.
