I have done exactly that for years.
If you are going to preach the sanctity of life and refuse a merciful passing then you need to be willing to be there daily to provide the care and compassion and companionship they need to endure their slow, painful decay and death.
To refuse someone a pain-free death with dignity only to abandon them to hospital or nursing home “care” surrounded by strangers is cruel and torturous.
A starkly reasonable point. I think about this with my wife who seems to be slowly slipping into the beyond over the last few years. Ups and downs where the downs are lower. I have been able to provide her with care and the hope for a reasonable recovery. But to just push assisted death upon her seems far too cruel if things get that bad. Maybe it will look different if either one of us gets that far gone.

First of all, I hear that your "pain free death with dignity" (M.A.I.D.) is really not all that painless. The doctor, I am told, paralyzes his "patient" so he or she can't respond to the various death-dealing drugs, which don't provide a suffering-free death. However, I am just passing along what I've read and heard, so don't take me at my word or lash out at me.
Second, we need to make a distinction between #1 stopping the feeding of a person in persistent vegetative state who has severe brain atrophy; and #2 refusing to provide medical treatment and care (?) to someone who needs legitimate, useful treatment. Is this all about a slippery slope? Yes, I guess it is. But that does not change the reality that we've become a death-denying society, with pulling out all the stops to keep extremely degenerated people alive.

Wouldn’t give up a minute of the nearly ten years spent daily hand feeding nursing home residents (2 for more than 3 years each and one for a year and a half) who were each expected to die within weeks/months when they entered the facility and would have were it not for my care. I don't consider Terri to have been euthanized. That was not correct. Useless medical "treatment" was abandoned so she died. I do recall, however, that some persons claim she died of dehydration and starvation - which is not a nice way to go.
May I be forgiven for this, but I have to get it out of my system. Terri felt she was too fat so she went on an extreme diet + practiced bulimia. So, if bulimia (plus horrible, excessive dieting) was the cause of her infertility (this came out when her husband sued her Dr. over this), then it certainly was the cause of her heart giving out. Bulimics/anorexics are dying of cardiac arrest all the time. Terri wanted to avoid nourishment so she could get skinny, and at the end she got her wish to be without nourishment when they pulled the plug on her feeding.
The Lord works in mysterious ways, does he not. There is much going on in any person's life and death which we know nothing about. Reading what I have, I conclude that Terri wanted to die and not be kept alive any longer.

Theoretically, yes. But not everyone who is in agony wants to be euthanized. They will demand more and more pain killing treatment. I know of one such case, an atheist. If they have not left instructions, how are we to know? It all depends on their mental condition, on whether they can make it clear what they want now, as their condition worsens.
Also, if they stated clearly that they want to keep on going, but then fall into a permanent unconscious state, maybe, yes, the plug needs to be pulled. However, there is the "little" matter of the organ harvesting industry, which is gaining traction; promoters of this evil practice will claim that the moment a very sick person falls unconscious, they'll never regain it.
So, this is a difficult matter. There must be a dozen things I haven't considered and some there's no room to discuss here. Another one is family who stand to benefit from ol' Grandpa's passing into eternity.

I witnessed an older man who had a stroke and couldn't talk or eat be dropped off in a nursing home. He lay there and rotted away (toes turned black from diabetes). No family visited. We live in a society that treats death like the plague.

How many of you who oppose assisted death with dignity are willing to sacrifice your time to daily visit and hand feed your family, friends and loved ones who are unable to feed themselves and will suffer a slow decline and agonizing death without such direct hands-on care?
I have done exactly that for years.
If you are going to preach the sanctity of life and refuse a merciful passing then you need to be willing to be there daily to provide the care and compassion and companionship they need to endure their slow, painful decay and death.

A starkly reasonable point. I think about this with my wife who seems to be slowly slipping into the beyond over the last few years. Ups and downs where the downs are lower. I have been able to provide her with care and the hope for a reasonable recovery. But to just push assisted death upon her seems far too cruel if things get that bad. First of all, I hear that your "pain free death with dignity" (M.A.I.D.) is really not all that painless. The doctor, I am told, paralyzes his "patient" so he or she can't respond to the various death-dealing drugs, which don't provide a suffering-free death. However, I am just passing along what I've read and heard, so don't take me at my word or lash out at me.
Second, we need to make a distinction between #1 stopping the feeding of a person in persistent vegetative state who has severe brain atrophy; and #2 refusing to provide medical treatment and care (?) to someone who needs legitimate, useful treatment. I don't consider Terri to have been euthanized. That was not correct. Useless medical "treatment" was abandoned so she died. I do recall, however, that some persons claim she died of dehydration and starvation - which is not a nice way to go.
May I be forgiven for this, but I have to get it out of my system. Terri felt she was too fat so she went on an extreme diet + practiced bulimia. So, if bulimia (plus horrible, excessive dieting) was the cause of her infertility (this came out when her husband sued her Dr. over this), then it certainly was the cause of her heart giving out. Bulimics/anorexics are dying of cardiac arrest all the time. Terri wanted to avoid nourishment so she could get skinny, and at the end she got her wish to be without nourishment when they pulled the plug on her feeding.
The Lord works in mysterious ways, does he not. There is much going on in any person's life and death which we know nothing about. Reading what I have, I conclude that Terri wanted to die and not be kept alive any longer.

Theoretically, yes. But not everyone who is in agony wants to be euthanized. They will demand more and more pain killing treatment. I know of one such case, an atheist. If they have not left instructions, how are we to know? It all depends on their mental condition, on whether they can make it clear what they want now, as their condition worsens.
Also, if they stated clearly that they want to keep on going, but then fall into a permanent unconscious state, maybe, yes, the plug needs to be pulled. However, there is the "little" matter of the organ harvesting industry, which is gaining traction; promoters of this evil practice will claim that the moment a very sick person falls unconscious, they'll never regain it.
So, this is a difficult matter. There must be a dozen things I haven't considered and some there's no room to discuss here. Another one is family who stand to benefit from ol' Grandpa's passing into eternity.
