Haven't investigated off-grid fully yet, but would involve solar panels with a battery: lithium, sodium, ? And it is often windy here...could also have a small wind turbine. Possibly a diesel generator as a back-up. Pre-1960s, there was just a diesel generator here I believe (the small shed that housed it is still here), which powered the dairy as well as the cottage.
